My Purple Green Cheeked Conure!

Postby Bubblelady on Mon Feb 09, 2009 2:14 am

(With apologies to Ogden Nash)

I never saw a purple parrot.
I never thought I'd see one.
And surely did I never think
That one day Gus would be one!

Since Gussie is my first Cinnamon Green Cheeked Conure, I was a bit suprised when she her head started turning maroon but thought maybe cinnamons heads changed to match their tails. I was a bit surprised, however, as she became increasingly purple. Her feathers look different with different lighting conditions. Sometimes she is actually irredescent! But when I had her along for the ride when I took my lovebird in to the vet, Gussie caused quite a stir. The Office Manager's first comment was, "Did you do that to her :?: :!: " She then called all the vets & techs out to see my baby. Seems nobody there had ever seen a purple green cheeked conure before. As I was leaving, an incoming patient (well, I guess the guinne pigs were the patients & it was the man who was carrying them who spoke), said, Nice bird. Pretty lavendar head. Wonder if cinnamon green cheeked conures inspired the old song: Lavender Blue, dilly dilly, Lavender Green :D Anyway check out my baby:

Just saw this post and pictures. My conures started to change color when I put in pink and yellow mineral perches. Suddenly noticed that their feet and faces were changing weird colors. Then one day my daughter gave them some cranberry juice. They bathed in it and turned purple/red and stayed that way for weeks. Your bird's feet also look like they've changed color, which makes me think that it's something external causing the color change instead of genetic.
