Looking for Info on Species: Austral/Astral/Magellan Conure

Postby Kerrie on Thu Jan 31, 2008 3:41 pm

I just saw this funny little conure at my local bird store and I wanted to get more info on the species. It goes by many names, including the Austral Conure/Parakeet, Astral Conure/Parakeet, Magellan Conure/Parakeet, and the scientific name is Enicognathus ferrugineus.

There doesn't seem to be much info on this species or the availability and breeding of it. I've never even heard of it until I met the little guy the other day! I can't find much info in any of my conure books.

Anyone know anything about these guys???
Thanks!

In my conure book it says" is mostly green, with dark edged feathers from Argentina. Its forehead, lores, and abdomen are marron. the wings are green tinged with blue, and the tail is maroon with green tips. In size, the austral conure measures 14.5 inches. austral conures have been successfully bred in captivity." It decribes color a bit more but that is all it says.

The only info I could find was more or less general for conures. No mention was made of special needs. So probably they would be treated the same as most of the conures. They are not plentiful in the pet market yet as you have found
