Nanday Petition.

Postby valkrum35 on Sat Jan 19, 2008 6:56 pm

"There is a proposal presently pending before the Pennsylvania Game Commission
to outlaw the possession of the Nanday conure. If passed, this law will not
"grandfather" any Nandays currently kept as pets. The birds will become
illegal. They will be subject to confiscation to be destroyed as pests.
Quakers already are illegal in Pennsylvania. " -- Nanday.com

This means, these friendly little birds will be euthanized and will be illegal to keep as pets. Lets Petition this. Keep Nandays in Pennsylvania.

PA Legislation

Postby Birdsafe on Sun Jan 20, 2008 9:16 am

While PA does have proposed legislation in the works, it does NOT rule out posession of Nandays, ONLY the continued breeding, sale, or importation of the birds into the state. A note from the director of the PA Game Comission says they are NOT interested in birds that are currently in the state as pets and they will NOT be going in and euthanizing any birds.

There are breeder groups who are, in my judgment, attempting to scare folks to oppose this legislation. Given the number of birds -- including Nandays (and I have three rescue Nandays) -- in sanctuaries and foster homes that need good homes, this legislation may not be all that bad.

In any event, if you are in PA and have a Nanday, I would not be overly concerned about this legislation.

It would seem logical to look to the recent history of quakers in PA to see what the proposed treatment of nandays is. I've seen not one word posted about quakers by the folks who're so upset about this proposal. Maybe they're too upset to think logically.

I do not see any reason FOR this legislation

Postby bostonbudgie on Sun Jan 20, 2008 11:20 am

I do NOT see ANY reason FOR this peice of (%^&*) legislation.
If somebody can point out any redeeming factor for it, then please inform me.
Elimination of quakers and nandays must be so more important than doing something against: elder abuse, internet porn and drugs in schools.......
Bloody nitwits...
BTW people in Penn aren't making a squawk about quakers because they do NOT have quakers....

Have you requested a copy of the materials available on the PGC's site? It might yield clues to what those offering the proposal feel are its redeeming factors. Thus far I've seen nothing on the site about why nandays vs all conures vs all parrots vs all birds. I read somewhere online that nandays are able to endure PA's winters, but surely that's true of some other parrots too. It's easier to understand the objection to quakers.

I have heard conflicting stories about what happened to Quakers when they passed that law years ago, so I'm not sure.

As far as a "redeeming quality" for the legislation -- one I can think of is that if it will reduce the breeding of the birds, maybe we won't end up with hundreds more being "discarded" I personally have three Nandays that were "discarded" -- one was left outside (in VA) to fend for itself; another was dropped off at a Pennsylvania animal shelter. We need to curtail the breeding, and if this legislation has that as an end result, then that is a positive.

afabirds.org has information on this bill.
I am just opposed to destroying these birds regardless of their claims. Penn is not very bird friendly. What will be next? budgies? cockatiels?
Most of my birds are rescue birds too.

Subject: IMPORTANT!!! Nanday Conure ban in Pennsylvania - please call the PA Game Commissioners now

Cross posting permitted.

If you can't attend the Pennsylvania Game Commission hearing 1/27 - 1/29, you can call each of the Game Commission members and voice your opposition to the proposal to prohibit the "importation, possession, sale, and release" of Nanday conures in Pennsylvania. PLEASE CALL NOW. Contact information is provided below.

It is easy to make a call to a representative. A staff member will take your message and pass it along to the representative.

When you call, you can say:

"Hello, my name is [your name]

(and if you live in Pennsylvania, add: [ and I am a constituent from [your town]. }

I want to urge [ representative's name ] to do everything possible to make sure that proposal that is on the Game Commission Agenda for the January 27th to 29th meeting to amend 58 Pennsylvania Code Section 137.1 to prohibit the "importation, possession, sale, and release of non-human primates and Nanday conures in Pennsylvania " DOES NOT PASS. I ASK [ legislator's name ] TO VOTE NO ON THE PROPOSAL.

This issue is very important to me. Thank you."

After making your calls, if you haven't already done so, send an email to the Game Commission at pgccomments@state.pa.us to reiterate your opposition to the proposal to amend 58 Pennsylvania Code Section 137.1 to prohibit the importation, possession, sale, and release of non-human primates and Nanday conures in Pennsylvania.

Finally, please be sure to tell your friends and family about this rare opportunity and how they can help, too.

Thank you for all you do to help us fight for our rights to own and keep all of our animals.
