Anyone ever see non native parrots in Florida ?

Postby Louie on Wed Nov 07, 2007 5:13 pm

Hi
Anyone ever see non native parrots in Florida ?

Since having moved to Florida I have seen 2 Mynah (could have been same bird just seen twice over a week) -1 African grey ,2 cockatoos in Key west and today saw 2 half moon conures in the parking lot of Home Depot in Doral.

I heard them while going to my car I was with my 2 neices who told me they were parakeets .
As we got close to the tree they flew away and they were conures (I knew by the noise they werent parakeets which is why went to look) I am not a conure expert but pretty sure they wre half moons .

Parakeets ,monks they certainly werent . The Mynah I tried to catch, lure with seeds but to no avail .
I love the non native parrots, etc granted not pc to say so but one of the few things I like about this place .

I've seen conures near Sarasota and St Armand's Key on the Gulf. Not sure what kind of conures, but they were surely making a lot of joyful noise

Yes you can hear conures from far away but not as loud as the cockatoos I heard/saw in Key west lol
I would love to have them nest by me feel like I am in the Amazon (I should say Australia for the cockatoos)

wow i'd luv to be surrounded by such tropical birds (outdoors) like its a jungle!

unfortunately i'm in cold NYC and the only tropicals i've spotted are some cheerfully noisy flocks of green quakers, and occasionally a feral keet or tiel flocking with finches or pigeons.

i think when i was down on the space coast somebody mentioned a part of florida called "The Jungle" -- does anyone know what part of FL that is in?

I'd LOVE to live near those quakers of yours. The videos of them are fascinating. Just love my quakers so much.

There's probably been parrots on the east coast longer than there have been on the west coast... not including thick billed parrots and carolina conures. Not only that but the flock at Telegraph Hill can be fed seeds and fruits from ones hands (however, it is now illegal to do so by the city of San Fransisco)

Compared to Nevada or what I knew of California, I wouldn't be able to tell you what part of Florida IS NOT a jungle!!!

exotic birds in FL>

Postby NancDavidDJ on Sat Mar 15, 2008 7:36 am

I live in Cali now but grew up in miami. My parents had an outside feeder for the wild birds. We had quakers, doves, parakeets. One time my dad had a rainbow lori land on his head. He caught it and sold it to a lady in the keys. Man was that lori nasty!! My mom recently photographed 2 nanday conures on a telephone wire. I think they are nanday's... let me see if I can post the photo!!? Nanc

Rainbow lories tend to be very fiesty birds to begin with... (and that one was probably an escaped pet) and quakers and nandays (as you have in the pics) are quite common in Florida. Fantastic photo!
