Do conures whistle / sing ?

Postby tonia1961 on Tue Jul 17, 2007 10:25 am

I just wonder if Mango is supposed to be making noises....other than his ear-piercing screeches? I've had a cockatiel and I remember Tiki would chirp and such. Do conures just not do that? Or is something wrong with Mango? He never makes any sounds other than he will give me an irritated little "raaannnk" when he's irritated and doesn't want me to do whatever I'm doing...that sound is generally accompanied by either him shoving my finger away with his beak....a light "beaking".....or an out and out BITE!!!!! Please tell me what to expect here?

Baby Boy has never made anything like a singing sound, nor does he talk. He does, however, have several different chatters and growls. He has his totally happy "I love peanuts" chatter that is adorable. When we play tug o war he growls a little. There's a little purr he does too, and an occasional sqeak. So, though they aren't song birds, they're verbal in their own way.
Love 'em all.

oh ok...well that makes me feel better. I just kept reading posts about sounds their bird make and although they weren't conures I got to thinking.......hmmmmmmmmm. So thanks of your answers. Mango makes some little funny sounds but nothing like my cockatiel used to.

Some conures never talk. Others cant be shut up :D . Some chirp all day. If you want your bird to respond to you-you have to talk to it a lot, play music for him, dance around and act silly. Animated voices get the best response. One day you will hear your bird mumbling under his breath. He is practicing speech. Some birds only speak and imitate noises when no one is around so keep listening On the other hand running to check the microwave when it is a bird beeping can get pretty annoying-----Yogi

The older birds get it is probably less likely he will talk---but it is not impossible. Sometimes an older bird will just quit talking for no reason. Maybe your bird does talk but you don't know how to listen. Listen to the tone and cadence of his chirpings----sound like a bad telephone? It isnt always clear as crystal. In the meantime keep talking and singing yourself. And yes I have heard of an older bird popping out with a word and never saying another one. Talking birds are fun but it really doesnt matter. Same sweethearts no matter what.----Yogi

just teach them some whistles.allof my birds have learned new whistles that I myself have taught them. Both of my conures laugh when I laugh also.Just whistle to them and they will respond to it in about one months time. They really whistle a lot when I cover them up at night.Hope this helps.
