Warm meals?

Postby tonia1961 on Tue Jun 05, 2007 4:42 pm

I've read lots of your posts and I'm just curious what you mean by "warm" meals. Could someone give me suggestions? I would love it if Mango felt all "warm and fuzzy" inside :)

Take a hand full of brown rice and a hand full of dried beans (pinto, black, etc.) and a tsp of red chili peppers and boil it up soft. Add veggies. I use frozen brocolli and carrots and the like. The darker the better. A jalapeno never hurts. Then the "special" something. It varies from sweet potato, squash, apple, etc. Heck, the last time I put in some fresh ground peanut butter.
Boil it up real good, put it in a blender and blend the heck out of it. Keep it in the fridge. Better yet, what I learned here and works real well, put it in an ice cube tray. About 1/2 a cube is plenty for Baby's breakfast.
The stuff is good enough that one time my hubby was using it to dip fresh bread into. Of course, nobody ever accused him of being normal.
Another addition is oatmeal. I use it as a thickener if my batch is too runny.
I cook every couple of weeks, depending on batch size.
Love 'em all.

BeckyBoo gave good advice! I make a similar "mix" with beans (the "15 bean" variety), rice (I prefer the brown&wild rice mix), peppers (any kind), chopped frozen okra and frozen mixed veggies. After cooking the rice and beans, I combine the other ingredients and freeze. I don't blend the mix, however; I simply warm up (using hot water) a serving (usually about 2 heaping tablespoons) and give it to my conure 3-4 times a week. On the days when he doesn't get his "mix", I usually just give him some of whatever I'm having for supper along with his pellets (as long as whatever I'm having is not bad for him; I seperate his portion before I add any salt, and he gets no dairy products and only very lean meat, like baked chicken). Another favorite is "birdie bread", my version is basically cornbread mixed with pellets and a smattering of seeds. You can also blend some veggies into the cornbread mix for added nutrition...

There IS a downside to warm food for sexually mature birds like Mango. Many avian knowledgeables feel that abundant, warm, moist food triggers the breeding urge, which can mean aggression -- and eggs for females. Just be aware, and adjust Mango's diet if his behavior shows a need.
