Jenday and an African Grey?

Postby Leslie and Brandy on Wed May 23, 2007 8:34 am

:D

Hi Everyone,

I introduced myself and my Jenday, Brandy, in the last post. I'd love to get another bird and was thinking of an African Grey.

I've had Brandy for almost 10 years and he's very attached to me. If I were to get a Grey, would they be compatible, or would Brandy be jealous since I'm all he's ever known?

Thanks for the input.

The only way to know is to get a grey.

There's nothing to say that your conure WILL be jealous... or that he wont. Same goes for the grey. It's just one of those things that you wont know until it happens.

my experince on this matter . true facts im going through this now. i recieved a senegal parrot on monday , this bird was with his owner for 11 yrs not another bird in the house, all by its self. he was moved here because she going to africa , when he arrived he was shaking like a leaf. he was scared ,of the other birds hes now in a room by himself. now my mom has a jenday who was the only bird for a long time..the bird finally got used to others but it took it a long time. if you get a grey do not please do not let them play together as they grey can and will if he or she decides to bite the jendays beak or worse head off. always supervise play time. now i know i have 38 birds and out of them all i have some very jealous birds who will attack if given a chance like my cockatoo. she hates any bird on my shoulder, again this is a personal decission. two birds more mess having two birds also means less time with the one you have now. his is happiness worth the new grey.. can you give the same amount of time with the jenday you are giving now , im lucky most of mine have play mates aND Cage mates they choose yet still bonded with me ,and i have help too. all these you must consider, before bringing in a new bird. are you prepared for more vet bills keeping grey away from jenday as greys are dandery birds and can cause jenday lungs problems, all things to be considered

    Jenday and Grey?

Postby Leslie and Brandy on Sat May 26, 2007 5:47 am

Thank you for your suggestions....they've been very helpful. I didn't realize that Grey's were dandery like cockatoos....never mind my Jenday but I may be allergic to Grey's...I know I am to cockatoos because of their 'powder'.

My jenday picks, and I want to implement some improvements in his environment, like more toys of different materials, building him a large playgym outside his cage with different tunnels, nooks and crannies where he can forage for treats/food like in the wild. And, maybe a hibiscus tree for him to sit on out on the patio.

We definitely won't rush into anything in getting a Grey. I want to make sure I devote enough time to Brandy (my conure).

    Thanks all!

Some people are allergic to cockatoo dust, but not greys... while others are allergic to both....

The only way you'll know is to go and interact with some greys and see if you can handle the dust factor...

being the bird has been by its self with you for so many years bringing in another might even make the plucking worse.. if i was you and would be bringing in another bird why not a another conure maybe a nanday or sun or something of course you would still need to be very careful .. and see if they get along sometimes birds dont like new comers and they may never get along,, its a long hard decission you and only you can make
