What do you use to clean your cages?

Postby crash01 on Tue May 08, 2007 5:19 pm

I am interested to know what each of you uses to clean your cages on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Also, when you soak your toys and perches etc... what do you soak them in an for how long?

I clean my cages dailey of any left over food. The bottom grates do really well to keep droppings out of reach. weekly I use one table spoon of bleach to one gallon of hot water and when they are clean I rinse, rinse, rinse. towel dry and than leave them in full sun for several hrs. The The same goes for toys perches ect.. I soak them in the same solution for 10-15 min and than soak in clean water for same amount of time. I then rinse really well and dry with a towel and leave in the sun for a few hrs. When I worked as a child care specialest this is the same thing I was taught to do for the childrens toys.
I was told that bleach is the only soap that rinses off with no residue. It is very important to rinse really well.

Here's a thread with cleaning information you might both find helpful: viewtopic.php?t=33269 Naomi, avian respiratory systems are far more efficient than ours, meaning they breathe much faster than we do and that makes them more susceptible to airborne toxins. Canaries in the mine. Bleach that's well rinsed is safe for humans, but not for birds. The damage is done slowly over time, so your birds may not have reacted in a way that's noticeable, but it's important to clean with products that aren't harmful to them.

I hope this is useful. Paca

I use Vinegar and water twice a week. I wipe down daily with wet rag, change the paper on the bottom of the cage daily.
I also clean the tree with Vinegar and water.
