RAREST ARATINGA

Postby NYC on Sat Apr 28, 2007 12:26 pm

i was wondering what, if any 1 or 2 species (or subspecies) or Aratinga conures, besides Golden, are currently considered the "rarest" in the states. (Sun Conures are CITES II, as are many)

off the top of my head i would say Hispaniolan conure even though thats listed as CITES II. maybe St Thomas? Yellow-Eared (CITES I)? but i'm sure there are others (besides the extinct already ones)...

but i don't know of any besides Golden & Yella-Eared, yet, that are on CITES I ....

....and if any aviculturists have there to talk about their uniqueness.

    I haven't a clue...

    http://www.cites.org/eng/app/appendices.shtml

    Just press "Ctrl + F", then search "parrots". That'll take you to the parrot section and shall tell you what birds are Appendix I.... but I don't really see aratingas there...

    I could easily be wrong, but I read it to say that all parrots (Psittaciformes) that are not listed in Appendix I are classified as Appendix II unless they are "Agapornis roseicollis, Melopsittacus undulatus, Nymphicus hollandicus and Psittacula krameri, which are not included in the Appendices..."

    Here's how CITES characterizes the relevant portion of Appendix I: PSITTACIFORMES Amazons, cockatoos, lories, lorikeets, macaws, parakeets, parrots.

    And how CITES characterizes the relevant portion of Appendix II: PSITTACIFORMES spp. (Except the species included in Appendix I and Agapornis roseicollis, Melopsittacus undulatus, Nymphicus hollandicus and Psittacula krameri, which are not included in the Appendices)

    Here's how Wikipedia describes conures:

    Conures, as the term is used by aviculturists, include only the genera Aratinga and Pyrrhura, as well as several single-species genera and one double-species genus*. These other genera are listed below:

    * Conuropsis: Carolina Parakeet (extinct)
    * Cyanoliseus: Patagonian Conure
    * Enicognathus: Austral and Slender-Billed Conures
    * Guarouba: Golden or Queen Of Bavaria Conure
    * Leptosittaca: Golden-Plumed Conure
    * Nandayus: Nanday Conure
    * Ognorhynchus: Yellow-Eared Conure

    So my presumption is that all conures are classified as CITES Appendix II. The parrots that are not protected by CITES because they are so very prolific (meaning over-bred) are peach-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis), budgies (Melopsittacus undulatus), cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) and Indian ringnecks (Psittacula krameri).

    good info! yeah... (all) conures that are on II are going to be the much more common ones than on I.

    i am just surprised not more species are not (yet) on I, and looking for insight on what species (besides Golden).

    I meant to say all Aratinga conures are Appendix II. Left out the operative word! If my Wikipedia listing of conure species is complete and accurate, shouldn't take long to check each on the Appendix I listing at the link MFids provided.

    Golden Conure

    Postby newmommy10312001 on Mon Aug 20, 2007 7:24 am

    Actually the Golden Conure is no longer in the Aratinga Species. They are in their own - Guaruba Garouba (and there is talk that they are really not a conure at all). I have these wonderful birds and yes, I also have a USFWS CBW Permit. They are the best in the world. And truly....worth their weight in GOLD! And...Goldens are Appendix I! You can go here for information on all species: http://www.parrots.org/index.php/encycl ... onquery/a/
