introducing my birds Pete and ZaZu

Postby Naomi on Wed Apr 18, 2007 11:08 am

I have a 4 yr old Maxi Pionus. I am getting a GCC baby soon. What is the best way to introduce them. Should I have the cages next to each other or keep them in seperate rooms for a while? Will the size difference make it unsafe to ever let them interact together? Pete my Maxi is very mellow like most Pionus. He is very tame nonagressive. I'm not sure who I would be worried about more Pete or ZaZu.
Thank you for your help.

It is in their best interest if you could quarantine your new GCC to ensure that it is healthy...

As for introduction, best in the same room in neutral territority... a place that neither one knows that well and to supervise closely. Because of the size difference there could potentially be a danger in allowing the two together... but sometimes you may end up with odd pairs.... the only risk you'd then take in allowing two birds together is if one bird is just cranky one day and takes it out on the smaller more fragile bird... heck they could be together for years and then one day one decides to just turn on the other... it's happened before...

    Here's my odd pair...

You should always keep them seperated for at least 30 days so if the new bird has any sicknesses even not visable ones won't infect Pete! Also should get Zazu a wellness check for Pete and Zazu's good! At least that is what I have been told and been reading here I am by no means an expert by no means!

Kisa, you are right there... However, we are starting to see that the normal 30 day quarantine is not enough... 60-90 days would actually be something more efficient, because sometimes it can take over 30 days for a disease or illness to show itself... but even then it could still remain dormant... which is why a vet check is normally best advised along with quarantine.
