Too Big Cage?

Postby luvthembirds on Thu Apr 05, 2007 9:26 pm

Is there such thing as a cage too big for a GCC? I found this Kings cage I like for $490 that is 5/8 bar spacing and 32wx23dx45h. Is this too big for a new baby? I've heard some birds like smaller cages but is this true with GCC? There is also one that is same bar spacing but 26x20x40 and is $425 sale price normally $459. Would this be a better cage? Another is a bit bigger but a bit more expensive. It is 27x24x35 and $549 on sale but normally $575. I appreciate all help for I am a newbie and am posting a bunch of topics every day. Plus, these prices do not include shipping but I'm hoping I could pick them up somewhere so I wouldn't have to pay shipping.

It depends on the cage.... there are some cages that I'd recommend, and others I'd say to stick away from due to their design (legs or cage shape or otherwise). Can you give us links to the cages in question?

For the smaller to medium sized birds I like to recommend the A&E or HQ Flight Cages (same cage company most likely, however different brands thus there may be a few slight differences...)
HQ Powder Coated Wrought Iron Cage
Double Flight Cage with Divider

I don't think the HQ Cage website is working right now or not but their address is http://www.hqcages.com/

The main thing about these cages though is that they are rather sturdy, a great size, and if you live in the states will cost $280 or less for the double, and $180 or less for the single... Heck, I got mine for $100 (bought by someone but never used! actually, it was still in the box and the family had owned the cage for like 6 months!) and it's possible to find them for even cheaper used...

Dear Lady dont have a nervous breakdown before you even get the bird. The thing about big cages is the bigger they are the more room they take and the more annoying it gets if you have a small placeAlso a big cage is much harder to give a deep cleaning.I heard of one lady who loaded her big cage on the back of a pick-up and went through the car wash

I have a senegal in this cage. I dont use the open top but have it wired shut for safety sake. I think the senegal might be close to GCC size . This cage is large enough for the senegal. In fact I also have the smaller version of this cage for a tiel .Very nice cage for the price.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Small-Bird-Parrot-T ... dZViewItem

The bar spacing is 1/2" on this cage. You can look at the other versions and other styles in her ebay store. Call if you have any ??. They are pretty good. They also have a regular store but the prices are higher.I got my cages at the Buy it now price as that's their reserve price anyhow. You can look at the other auctions also on ebay as they have a variety of cages to look at and then you can buy where you please. Remember if your bird will be out of the cage a lot you dont need a HUGE cage. An easy way to get an idea of cage size is to tape newspaper together and cut it to the proper size. The seed skirts add to the dimensions so take that into account. . And for goodness sakes RELAX. Birds are supposed to be fun.-----Yogi

To be honest Yogi, I wouldn't necessarily recommend that cage.. the cage is perfectly fine (with top wired shut), however the legs are what concerns me the most... I just wouldn't trust them to be safe to be honest...

Senegals however are quite a bit bigger than green cheeks.... considering that green cheeks are about the size of an english budgerigar, however more slender in body shape... or up to the size of a small cockatiel....

Yes MFids I know your concern is that the bird will land on the legs and slide down and strangle itselfat the bottom of the Vee . This is possible but there are simple solutions . First Never leave your bird untended. If my bird is out if I have to leave the room the bird goes with me or or is put back in the cage.Even answering the phone is no problem. I either take a phone with me or let the answering service pick it up. Next if it really bothers you you can block off the dangerous part by jamming a little card board in there & covering it with color cordinated electrical tape or wrapping some coated wire , cotton rope or jute twine around and between the two bars in a figure 8. If your bird is alone long enough to chew through this stuff he shouldnt be out of his cage.Or you can pay a few hundred $ more for another cage. My birds are not allowed on the floor either as I consider that very unsafe. As with children there is no way we can guard our birds every single minute but we can be vigilant. or simply dont buy this cage. You notice I recomended she look at other cages . All I know is I have 3 of these cages in different sizes . I think this is the last time I give any advice on cages except to recommend a place to look.------Yogi

Yogi, please accept my apology. I only meant it as a warning that the legs can be dangerous. I know that you take great care of your birds but it's hard enough when other people don't even know about the possible hazard and are not vigilant enough about watching over their birds... there in lies the problem, the bird is curious or it wants down off it's cage (or up) which leads to a bird ON the legs. Like I said I don't think there is anything wrong WITH the cage, it's just the legs... it's better to be forewarned than not at all.

And your right, there are things that can be done to remove the "V" in the legs.... you've got all great suggestions, and I've also heard of splitting a tennis ball and jamming it down there as well!

I am relaxed about getting a bird and i love everything bird that is why I am looking at different cages. One kind of fun to me is to look at adifferent cage and imagine the bird and toys I could put in it. I'm young and on spring break and have nothin else to do. I appreciate all the help. I am having alot of fun looking into birds I can't imagine what it will be like when I finally get one! :D

Monica
There's no apology necessary. You were right to make your point and In like manner I wanted to point out most problems can be solved with common sense. Now I gotta go look up the size difference between a GCC & a senegal :D . -----Yogi

luvthembirds, you'll truly enjoy having a bird once you find that special one! Even more so if a bird chooses you! I have yet to be able to have a bird choose me (at least one that I could take home! ) but the closest bond such as that when found when a bird chooses you is probably shared with my mitred conure! I have a unique bond with my cherry head, and a few other birds who are tame to varying degrees (the tamest being Casey) while the rest are 'wild'.

Yogi, glad that no harm was done! You are right most things can be solved with common sense! However not all people use common sense so they just don't think of the possibilities... I don't normally recommend cages with "fancy" legs let alone tops that can open... unless of course the owner plans on taking the necessary precautions... however in no way did I mean for you to decide to NOT give cage advice!

Looking at the Feather Farm Online Store there are indeed some other good cages there, even some for great prices! It'd just be nice if some of these cages could come with a warning label or better yet if the cage manufacturers could learn how to build cages SAFELY for the birds!

I found one last night at Petco all it needed was casters the wheels for those of you that don't know what casters are! It is an avian select with a playtop it retails for 399 but they took off 100 dollars for the wheels and I don't have to drive clear to Stillwater it is here only 35 minutes away!

This is the cage it is on sale right now for 299 but that doesn't include tax and shipping so I am definetly getting a deal!

Nice lookin cage. Keep your eye out for the casters. They are very handy for moving the cage. Try calling the company & see what they say. They might just send you some. Wont hurt to try.-----Yogi

I have had the experience of a bird choosing me! The only problem it was a tiel and me and my mum are allergic( I think). I put my hand into the aquarium he was in and he crawled up and started preening me. Later i went back again and he ran from the other side of it through the water dish to get to me. Talk about love :D
