babies

Postby ljvp54 on Wed Mar 21, 2007 5:58 pm

Hi everyone,...I am the person who wrote about conures fighting...well, I ended up with a clutch of 4 eggs...all of which hatched...1 died 2 days in and I thought I had 3 viable babies but, for some reason one of the babies died yesterday....I believe it's b/c the mother isn't feeding them....I pulled the other 2 (11 days and 6 days old) today and put them in an aquarium with a heating pad covering 1/2 of the bottom...I did my first hand feeding of them about an hour ago.....I'm afraid to put them back into the nest b/c Mama doesn't seem interested in feeding them so I guess I have no choice....I have hand fed cockatiels many times, successfully but never green cheeked conures.....anyone have any advice or direction???I'm kind of "flying" by the seat of my pants, here...I bought "EXACT" baby formula and am starting them on a 1-3 mixture and feeding at 105 degrees using an insulin syringe(with the needle removed, of course) to start. Both babies fed easily and willingly. I can't get the dead baby out b/c Mama attacks me every time I open the cage and then runs back and sits on the dead baby....yet she ignored the 2 left alive....I'm not quite sure what to do from here....
Any input will be helpful! Thanks, LJVP

Sounds like you have it under control so far. Conure babies are very easy to feed so you will have no problem with that. Just make sure you feed them whenever their crops are empty completely. They are young and it may be every 4-5 hours.
As far as the dead baby and the mom- try to block her or distract her with a stick or piece of cardboard so you can remove the baby. You need to get it out of there as soon as possible.

I was just reading your old post about the conures fighting. So the parents of these babies are related?? Didn't you say it was a father and his two offspring? I would not keep them together as inbreeding may be a reason for the deaths of the first two babies. Serious complications and chronic problems are present much more in inbred birds.

The father of these offspring is either the brother of the mother, or the father of the mother... (from what I gather) thus, indeed you are right... more chance for the chicks to die since they are so closely related...

ljvp54, I suggest you house all of your greencheeks in separate cages (or rather DO NOT allow them to breed again if indeed they are related), and if you know how to handraise the chicks, handraise them and preferably find homes for them.... but be sure that any potential adopters be sure that they know that these birds are inbred, thus wouldn't be good breeders... and that there is a potential that they may not live as long as other greencheeks due to being inbred.

You need to get the nestbox removed immediately, to stop the hen from possibly laying again. You might want to look into getting fake eggs as well. Feed them as the directions say on the formula.... otherwise I don't really have any suggestions...

thanks, guys....yeah this ended up totally NOT what I wanted....I thought I had seperated the right 2 birds till all of a sudden I had eggs...
I managed to get the dead baby out of the cage late last nite...the Mama finally abandoned it...the strange thing is that , now, every time the babies make a peep the parents start screaming....both babies are feeding pretty well...the little one not as strongly, but still ends up with a full crop at each feeding. HOWEVER they cry to be fed every 1.5-2 hours and their crops ARE empty at that point. I have 3 cages, now, altho the cage Mama is in is smaller....and the babies (if they survive) have been promised to 1 person in NY and one in NJ...both of which know the genetic history....One other question...is it normal for GCC's to sleep on their BACKS??? these 2 babies seem to always flip themsleves over onto their backs whenever they've been fed and are ready to go back to sleep.

Thanks, again, LJVP

It's good that the potential adopters do know their genetic history... as for chicks sleeping on their back??? Yes, I'd say that's quite normal! At least that is from information that I've gathered (or found), that some parrots just naturally flip on their backs and go to sleep.

Yes, Green Cheek Conures will sleep on their backs. My GCC does all the time, but I originally thought it was because he had broken his leg so he is used to sleeping on his side.
