whats it all mean?

Postby jeco on Sat Mar 10, 2007 6:08 am

Greetings. 6 days ago I adopted a 5 month old sun conure. He is my first bird other than budgies. He was hand fed and knows "step up" and is quite friendly. The biting has almost stopped and he seems to like me. He sat on my hand yesteday while I gave him a bath and he seemed to enjoy it.
I just wish he came with sub-titles or a conure-to-english dictionary so I can understand what he is trying to tell me. Whats it all mean?
head bobbing
shoulder fluttering
fluffing up
screaming when I leave the room
His name is Musica and he is definately a morning person

Conures are one of the birds that head bob.... it could be for attention, to display, or otherwise.

Shoulder fluttering... not so sure about this? Maybe explain it better?

Fluffing up is just a way to rearrange their feathers when a few may be out of order... part of preening... and some birds will fluff too when you talk to them.

The screaming when you leave the room... means your sun wants to go with you, doesn't want to be left alone. I suggest not to encourage this by seeing him if he screams, ignore him completely until he goes quiet then go and reward. Of course you could get a table top perch and bring your conure along.... however, do not give your conure more attention than what you'd be able to give in the future...

Ah yes, I know what you mean now!!! It means they are eager to get to something... and in this instance, it would be you! My mitred most prominently does this, and it's normally when I'm in his presence, but he's not WITH me, or I'm taking him to a place that he likes (such as the bathroom cupboards.... ).

Since you are new to conures, this is a good board to read! I had a budgie in the past, and was amazed at the difference between budgies and conures (once I got my first conure). Conures are a much "needier" bird than budgies; they want (and to some extent need) to be close to you much more than budgies do. (Hence the contact calling when you leave the room, and the rapid wing fluttering when you're in sight.) One of the bigger differences that caught ME off guard was the need that conures have to CHEW! You must supply them with thin wood (popsicle sticks, clothespins, etc) to chew on to keep their beak in trim. (They will also chew on clothes, so only wear old clothing when your bird is on your person.) Go thru some of the older posts and pick out the topics that catch your eye; you will learn lots from reading thru the various conure messages.

9 days as a conure parent and he no longer bites at all. Now he will actually hike a leg when he seen my finger coming. (hoe cool is that).
Question.....I am surround by pine trees and would like to let musica shred as many as his little heart desires. How do I tell a good one from a bad one when gathering them up? Is boiling them sufficient to kill anything bad on them?
Thanxs

I don't think you can safely allow your bird to have pine trees... the wood is safe, but not in its natural form.. due to all the sticky sap they produce...

You could look for other trees however to use instead...

I've never tried it out personally... but someone else said that it's safe if you clean them up real well, then bake in the oven at 300 for 15 minutes. Here's another idea...

I use pine wood for all my birds ladders & outdoor swings...with the cutting down of trees here in Fla, it is plentiful, thanks also to hurricanes!! This is what I do, I cut the pieces in lengths that will fit in a tub of water...in that tub of water I pour a bottle of household bleach in it....LET wood branches soak for a week...then place logs into another fresh water bin to soak for a few days...then take all wood out....lay outside (off the ground) in the sunshine & allow to dry thoroughly about a week, THEN I peel off all the heavy sappy looking exterior! Whaaalah! You have awesome fresh pine wood! Its beatiful...this way also insures it kills any lil critter buggies if inside wood...I do have a friend that uses the pine sap & all...I don't trust it nor do I like my WHITE birds having icky sticky all over them...not good idea for white Cockatoos for sure! Trust me! Good luck!
