If your bird ever gets away or stolen, you may need to have the band information to identify it. If it looks like it is too small and is bothering the bird, it can be removed at the vet hospital. I personally like having a band on all my birds. They usually have the hatch year and the hatch state. I breed lovebirds and I try to make sure they all have bands on, that way if anyone ever wants to know where the bird came from, they can look up the band info, find me and ask about it. I keep records of all the babies hatched here: Their hatch date, parents, band number, any DNA sexing, ect. I hope this helps!

As stated the main reason for bands is identification. If ever the band is removed it should be saved just in case you need the info off it one day.If you have an extremely valuable bird it should be microchipped anyhow as well as any of your other birds you want positive ID for. Bands can get too tight or caught causing injury. There is a special snipper type tool to remove bands. However it is extremely easy to injure the birds delicate foot when removing the band. You can break the bone or cut it easily. Best to let someone experienced do this--like an avian vet. I only ever had trouble with one band.-----Yogi
