Eggbound Greencheeks

Postby GreencheeksRus on Thu Mar 01, 2007 1:11 pm

I need some help. I have lost 3 females in the past 2 weeks eggbound. The first one that died was a first timer but the other 2 are from my breeding stock of last year. Can anyone help. Why would this happen or am I just having a really bad year!!

I'm very sorry for you and the poor birds. What does your vet think is the reason? Have their necropsies shown anything that might hint at diet or environmental conditions?

The vet said that everything was fine. That with the firs one it might have been that it was her first time and she was unexperienced but the other 2 laid fine last year and had already laid 3 and 4 eggs. Their test also came back fine.

Sorry you lost your birds. That was quite a loss.

I am assuming your vet is an avian vet. It just seems odd no reason was found for losing 3 birds at once. Are the birds related?

I hope you find an answer. Keep us posted.

No none are related. The first one was young and may not have been ready to lay eggs. The vet is an Avian vet I just called him again and he said to give them more calcium but that they were healthy. I will let you know what happens.
    Thanks

How young was the first one and was she paired or laying infertile eggs without a mate?

What did the most recent bloodwork on your experienced breeders show their calcium levels to be? What do you feed your flock to provide calcium? We may be able to help you if diet was the problem. Egg binding is usually caused by calcium deprivation due to inadequate diet or too many eggs in too short a time.

    Again, I'm really sorry.

I too would say that maybe they arent getting enough calcium in their diet. We feed a breeder formula food with higher calcium during breeding season as well as providing extra calcium.
