Salt?

Postby kalloo on Sun Dec 17, 2006 8:42 am

My husband was brought up on a farm. He says that salt is deadly poisonous for chickens - he's seen them die after eating salt.
Chickens are birds - and Pujah, my Crimson Bellied is a bird.
With me so far...?
Yesterday he was horrified to see Pujah chomping away deep inside a big bag of Doritos Jalapeno chips - and thoroughly enjoying herself.
I said they couldn't hurt her - he says they can. Of course she shouldn't be allowed to help herself - but one or two once in a while ... can that be so bad?
Thanks in advance folks for all your sage advice. It's because of you and advice given on this board that little Pujah seems to be thriving - she's even beginning to talk!

The less salt you can feed a bird, the better. They can't process salt like we do, and it can build up in their system quickly. One bit of a chip every once in a while won't hurt them, but two whole chips to a conure is like eating a whole bag for us!

Provide plenty of fresh water and keep him away from the chips in the future, but this probably won't hurt him too much for now.
