Needing help with 9 week old sun

Postby AerosMom on Wed Aug 25, 2010 5:40 pm

My baby sun conure is having some difficulty weaning. He eats solid food on his own out of the bowl I see him do it several times a day so I know he is eating. Problem is he still VERY willingly will take and often beg for the syringe even though at this point its room temperature baby rice cereal with some formula (vet recommended). He is only on two feedings a day which are small, my question is should I discontinue the hand feedings all together since he seems to be eating on his own? Or should I wait till he is no longer interested in the syringe?

(Yes, this is my first time hand feeding and weaning a baby bird. I have had him since he was two weeks old and he has been to vet visits during the process in which the vet has given me nothing but good feedback. So if you have anything to say about me getting the bird before it was weaned please save your words cause I really don’t care about your negative comments :/ )

I'd recommend to keep feeding him. Handraised chicks often wean slower than parent raised chicks, and I have also heard that chicks who are raised alone may wean even slower due to not having a 'teacher' around. (or so I have heard) He may not be fully weaned until he's 10-13 weeks old, so don't worry if he's still hungry for food! Keep offering him as much as he wants as well as a variety of healthy adult foods.
