Predicting Mutations

Postby jimhcctx on Mon Jan 25, 2010 6:44 am

Hello,

I have a pair of conures who are about 5 days away of hatching thier eggs. The male is a "triple Split" and the female is a Pineapple.

I am not sure exactly what the term tripple-split is as far as split to what, but thier is what appears to be Normal and Cinimmon and what ever else in there, over all at first impression, you might think it was a normal GC, but then you notice none of the feather colors are the same, the head looks a bit more cinnimon, their is a dark red patch on his belly, etc. The bird came from a top breeder who closed thier doors, so I am guessing the other was a yellow-sided. If this wass the case, it would be (Yellow sided, Normal, and Cinimmon), however they also had a lot of turquoise mutations as well). This is the first time the bird has mated (2008 baby)).

Anyone have any idea what these birds might produce?

thanks

Jim

You can "throw" 4 visual colors in the hens: yellowsided, cinnamion, pineapples, and normals.

All the males would be split, except the visual pinapples: cinn/ys, ys/cin, normals/pineapples, and pineapples.

A bird cannot be split normal. Cinnamon and yellowside mutations are sex-linked. Pineapple is a combination of cinnamon and pineapple. Turquoise is a par-blue mutation that is recessive. Cinnamon, yellowside (opaline), and turquoise are the top 3 common mutations in Green Cheeks. It would help to know the males parentage.

Do you have pictures of the parents as well as the offspring? (best when feathered out)

Here's a genetic calculator...

And below, a Green Cheek Conure Color Inheritance, which includes cinnamon, yellowsided, and pineapple (along with normal, of course)

Jim:

I am pretty sure I also purchased conures from this breeder in TX. I have a "triple" split male from them paired with a yellowsided/turquoise hen. In my case, the male is a normal but is split cinnamon, yellowsided & turquoise. I would suspect that is what your "triple" split male is. In any case, you should have pretty babies especially if the pineapple hen is split turquoise.
I have had visual turquoise mutations in each clutch from my pair - a visual turquoise yellowsided DNA Male and a visual Turquoise/yellowsided DNA male. I have both of them still - gorgeous birds for sure! Good luck!!
