Well, I had a terrible time sizing down this picture to post. Thanks to Kirsten for doing it for me.
I have more pictures of this bird but no time today to try and post one today. But I really believe this IS a pied GC.
As for age...I have no idea about age of this bird. A member of the Canary, Finch, Society Club I belong to buys birds from Aviaries who are going out of business to sell for profit. Some even GIVE their birds to this man!
I can only estimate the bird to be perhaps 6 to 8 months old but that doesn't mean it is. The bird is molting and doesn't have all its tail feathers.
There are a lot of yellow feathers in the back and wings of this Pineapple GC. A few of the yellow feathers mixed in the green back have red mixed with the yellow! I think mostly on the shoulder area.
As for diet...This man is only feeding large hook bills LEFT OVER seed from cleaning and feeding a reputable breeders large birds. OMG!!!
He will mostly tell you the birds are young but he really has no idea on age. He does sell birds for other breeders and has a card on the cages of these birds as to date of hatch.
I am appalled at how he feeds these birds, but he is only what I call a "bird broker" and has done this for years as a means of income. God help his birds. I am also purchasing a pair of Cinnamon GC from this man tomorrow. I only hope they are still alive by then!
IF only I had lots of money, I would buy the flock he purchased for profit. Even if I were never able to sell them, I would know they were properly fed and cared for. That's the way I am.
I myself feed a good Cockatiel seed mix and Zupreem pellets plus fresh fruits everyday to my GC's. And of course, they get fresh clean water everyday.
They enjoy being sprayed with water for their bath.
This is going to be a very interesting bird in my Aviary to watch. My Aviary is inside my home.
As for breeding this bird... I have to first condition this bird, have it sexed and decide what to breed it to. I only have a hand fed Yellow Side at this time. I also have to get it sexed.
I understand that the genetics of the pied GC is unknown (or so far my research shows this). I hope that it will produce more GC's with this color mutation when I breed it, or it's off spring should.
I will try to put more pictures of this bird on this site as time goes along.
