New "green" cookware

Postby raddar on Fri Oct 09, 2009 4:15 pm

Hi - I'm new to the forum, and apologize in advance if my post is in the wrong place. I am the owner of a sun conure. We adopted him from someone who rescues birds. I've had him for about 1 1/2 years. When we got him I began reading all I could about sun conures, and realized how many things in my house would have to change! Pretty much all of my cookware became banned, since most of it was calaphon. My question is - has anyone used the new "green" cookware, it doesn't contain the dangerous chemical that is in all the teflon based pans. I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is safe for birds, or am I better off sticking with stainless steel & cast iron cookware. I would appreciate any help. Thanks! :D

Great question :) Here are links to some of the discussions we've had here in the past about cookware. I hope the type you're asking about are included in these comments:

Thank you for the links - still hasn't answered the question - maybe the product is still too new of a product - just trying to see if it is truly "green" - have found many cleaning products that claim they are "green & no scent", but still don't trust them, still have a scent- sticking with vinegar........... :)

The links contain info about what qxs to to ask the manufacturer. Yes, you're right that assumptions aren't enough.

Many owners have been using hard anodized aluminum cookware that is made PTFE free without issues for years. My family has had a set for 14 or so years, longer than I've had birds. Does that make them safe? Not necessarily, as an overheated pan, or burnt food in the pan may still give off harmful fumes. Many of the green pans use the same sort of technology (hard-anodized aluminum), with Thermolon - whatever that is.

Thanks so much for the input. I think I'll stick with my stainless steel for now, seems to be the safest so far. :D
