New Addition - Ducorps Cockatoo

Postby petdiva on Thu Sep 25, 2008 11:17 am

Part of me is excited, and part of me is really nervous...

I will soon be adding a rehomed Ducorps Cocktoo to my flock. It's been a little over two years since I lost Nika, my Triton Cocktoo, to an illness. Since then, I have been keeping my eyes out for another Triton or possibly a Greater, Citron, or Medium. I originally really wanted another Triton because I loved Nika so much, but I was also worried that I might place unfair expectations on the new bird since Nika was so wonderful. I think it's more important to choose the new bird based on personality than the species. After all, before getting Nika, I wanted an Umbrella or a Moluccan, but I found Nika, who was a great bird for me. Now I found Talli. From discussions with her owner, I think she will fit in well with the rest of my flock. I'm not picking her up until the middle to end of October. I have to be out of town for a week for work/training. I didn't want to bring Talli home, put her in another room for quarantine, and then leave her alone with just my pet sitter stopping in a couple times a day. It will be a big enough adjustment as it is for her to move to a new home.

Any other Ducorps owners out there?

Talli is a 5 year old female. She was originally purchased as a baby by a breeder to be a mate for a male he had. He never got around to pairing the two birds so he sold them as pets because they were both still so tame. The woman who bought Talli decided to rehome her because Talli has not been getting adequate attention. The woman has not been in a rush because Talli is pretty quiet and not demanding, but she feels guilty when she comes in at night and sees Talli hop over to her door, wanting to be loved up She is not a spoiled cockatoo, probably because her first owner didn't spend lots of time cuddling her like some cockatoo owners do.

Although there aren't any Ducorps breeders in my state, I actually found Talli about 200 miles away so I will driving to pick her up rather than having her flown in.

I will try to post a picture later. The ones I've been sent are probably too large (1 M) so I'll need to work with them first.

Nope, you didn't miss any updates; I have just been busy so I haven't really been posting much lately.

I picked up Talli on November 1. She is a very sweet little bird. The day I picked her up turned out to be very frustrating and eye opening though. I will post more later tonight or tomorrow when I have a little more time to post.
