Rose breasted cockatoo question about fatty tissues

Postby saiyan on Tue Apr 29, 2008 5:32 am

Hi,

I just found out that you have to be very careful with rose breasteds diets. If you don't feed them according to a strict diet, they will start having fatty tumors build up on their body. Can anyone shed some light on this for me please. I need to be more educated on this, because I know absolutely nothing about this.

Thanks

This is very true. You have to be very careful with their diets. Just Google diet for galah or rose-breasted cockatoo. You should find lots of information.

A diet low in seeds (if not dry seeds, try feeding sprouted seeds instead), maybe some pellets, and lots of fresh food.

Daily exercise for at least 30 mins or so a day GREATLY helps reduce fatty tissue. If your bird is flighted, teach the bird to come to you on command, and to fly to other places. If the bird is clipped, put the bird on your hand and jog around the house! Get the bird moving! Make it fun! Give treats!

Birds who are active and constantly exercising every day can probably handle a diet higher in fat than a bird who's clipped and just sits in their cage...

As Mom of 2 Rosebreasted Cockatoos, we do not clip wings and have a safe place, they fly, and get exercise daily, cause they Love to eat!

They need at least 30-45 minutes daily of cardio, to keep fat tissue within healthy limits.

Thanks for the great information everyone. I will have to make sure my birds get some flight time everyday to ensure they are getting exercise. I don't normally clip any of them, so they fly from perch to cage when I am at home.

But this fatty tissue issue really caused me some concern, because I was never aware of something like that before. Maybe I had read about it, but simply just glimpsed over the topic because I never had any Rose Breasteds before. But now that I do, I really have to make sure I keep them fit.

    Thanks again.

It can happen in any species... though they say that it's most common in budgies, cockatiels, quakers, amazons, and some cockatoos...
