I haven't heard of any need to have a permit to keep them.

In short, they are the size of a large cockatoo... because that's what they are.

You should be able to get information on how to keep them from other owners and breeders of palm too's...

This might be a starting point

I would think that a person who is getting a pair of palm cockatoos
would already be knowlegeable about their needs and care. Could the original post possible be a hoax ?

Maybe, but if you go back and read the post, it states that the prospective owner would get the birds from an aunt who passed away; not going out to buy them blindly.

    Re: Black Palm Cockatoo Question

I have been involved with palms for a few years now and they are like other cockatoos and can be agressive towards their female mate. If in to small of a cage the male will kill the female. I workd years ago at an aviary in St. Augustine, FL. and the owner went from a 12ft X 12ft cage to a 6 X 6 cage and the male killed the female over the size as they were comfortable with each for years before the reduced size. They are a little funny about foods and my male loves all types of nuts, but he will not even think about pellets. Every bird is different and one big favorite is pine nuts and macadamia nuts. Palms have funny antics with their heads turning upside down and the call is much more pleasant to wake up to then a moluccan or an umbrella. A great new movie that has a good part on Palms is Oz the Land Donwunder, which at the end goes into their breeding antics and you can hear their sounds as well. So you need to know as much as possible about the birds if they are coming your way and I am sure that if you are receiving such a great bird that the person whom owns them will not just hand over a pair of these birds and say here you are and enjoy. That would be like owning a Yugo and your rich cousin suddenly feels sorry for you and gives you a Saleen Mustang.

Yes, this is probably another spoof, but it gave me something to talk about for five minutes.

a black palm is a very BIG cockatoo.....sometimes the size of a macaw (depending on how well they were kept, domestic bred or wild caught, etc.)...alot of bird to say the least and require very special diet to keep them im optimum health. The person receiving them should study up on everything they can prior to getting them.

The size goes by the specie and not the diet. Mine is a goliath, which is bigger then the atterimus and not from the same country. My goliath has a head about the size of a good size hyacinth and he can open macadamia nuts just as easy. My original one that I use to keep at my bird store in Indy was an atterimus and he was about the size of a moluccan and he had a harder time opening macadamia nuts. The one that I have now was an ABRC bird and I have his history from when he was hatched up until i purchased him. He is 20 years old and a nice bird that was imprinted years ago with humans and has no interest in female birds. A lot of the original ABRC birds are that way. Richard had so many as pets that they didn't know how to be birds once they were of breeder age. Some of what a person is selling on this site are that way and will make better pets then breeders.
