Can birds Choke?

Postby PuddlesMom on Wed Jan 23, 2008 5:20 pm

and if so, How do you help them?

I am asking because my Cockatiel, Peaches who was only 7, crossed over the bridge today. I am beside my self right now since I have no idea what happend to her. I heard some tapping/hissing noise coming from her cage, ran over she stepped right up- which she never does, and then when i had her in my hand she was gasping for air and wouldn't stand up on her legs, she wanted to lay down. I tried rubbing her neck but i didn't feel anything.

Then all of a sudden up came some red tinted pure liquid, alot of it and she passed on. I am soo very upset, there was nothing I could do, it all happened so fast, I didn't even have time to pick up the phone, it happened in less than a 2 minute time frame.

Its been 1 year since Fiesta past away in my hand due to a Teflon exposure, it was soo upsetting to have Peaches pass away the same way in my hand as Fiesta did.

Puddles is now my only bird, and I am scared to death...I can't do this again!!!!!

I'm very sorry, Tawny. As always with a loss, a necropsy by your avian vet is the best way to learn as much as possible about why she's gone. But every hour counts -- if your vet is still open tonight, please rush the body to her now. If you must wait overnight, put the body into a baggie and into the 'fridge. Hard to do, I know, OOO how I know, but you have Puddles to protect. Please hurry.

    So sad for you, Paca

    Tawny,
Paca is right.........you have to protect Puddles and it IS hard to put your little birdy in the fridge but it would be so much harder if you lost Puddles and didn't have to. I'm so sorry for your loss. It's devastating.

Tawny, I'm so sorry about Peaches. I agree with the other posts. You should have her necropsied. I realize some people have a hard time with this. It's not so long ago that I had to make the same decision. My Triton Cockatoo was euthanized for quality of life issues because she was having seizures, falling, and getting hurt. It killed me, and I still get teary eyed over it. My vet was concerned about my other birds. If it makes you feel any better, I looked at it that her soul was gone and just her body was left. Her ashes were sent to me afterwards so that I could still bury her.
