Need a little Utoo help

Postby Adell on Sat Dec 29, 2007 12:09 pm

I am wondering if an of you can give me some help. I have a 7 year old Utoo and she is looking fluffy. She doesn't seem to have very much feather length. They all look like they are about 1/2 the size (both in lenght and wigth) as they should be. And she isn't water repellant, we bathed her today and as soon as the water touched her she was wet to the skin.

I am not seeing any plucking or feathers in the cage.

Thanks

Have you considered taking your cockatoo to an avian vet? There could be something wrong going on.

There is not many in my area, but I am planning on a check up for her, but I don't think its a health thing, she is happy, eatting really well.

I did wonder if because I don't feet her an sun flower seeds at all, that she is not getting the oil she needs in her diet.

The reason I don't feed her any sun flower seeds is because before I got her she was ONLY fed sun flower seeds. She is possessive of them, and it took a lot of work to get her to eat anything but them.

I hope you're right that her poor feathering is not caused by illness, but if she were mine, I'd get her examined by an avian vet ASAP and have thorough blood testing done. You haven't said how long you've had her, but obviously her diet prior to that was dreadfully insufficient for her good health. You've introduced her to a half dozen or more birds this past year who've not had blood work done. It's a dangerous situation, so I hope you're right and that she'll be blood tested very soon.

A much healthier way to give her the omega oils she needs is by adding flax seed, or hemp, or red palm oil to her food. Good alternatives!
