need help/ u2 hen laying

Postby d4shee on Thu Dec 13, 2007 1:57 pm

I put wood shavings in her nest about 4 in. deep ,but she moves them over too one side and laid her eggs on the bare floor of the nest box. She laid 3 eggs in Oct. but they were clear. I saw them mateing last week an I was hoping this time the eggs would be ok. Can anyone help me? This is my first try at breeding u2s. David Forshee Pt. Pleasant Wv.

It all sounds very hopeful to me, and probably better than average, except that 4 eggs might be too many if it's in one clutch. You might expect 2 eggs in a clutch, and maybe 3. If you have 4 eggs laid again, within a period of 6 days, then you might have 2 hens ?

Sorry, I misread and forgot. 3 eggs is normal, but not average for a first clutch. Again, your prospects look hopeful.

My Sun Conures push most of the wood shavings out of the nest box. The female lays the eggs on the bottom bare spot also.

Since your female laid eggs just two months ago, if these eggs are not fertile, I would seriously consider taking off the nest box to give them a break. It is not good for females to keep laying eggs, especially within so short of time.
