Ahk! What can I do for a cage?!

Postby gersfeld on Sun Oct 07, 2007 11:59 pm

I am the proud mom of three cockatoos, all rescues. I have a U2, an M2 and a G2 and I have the chance to give a home to a pitiful little Medium SC2, but since my husband came home with two Amazons last week I have no more room for another cage! We threw our sofa out to make room for the two large cages that came with them too. The ONLY option I have is to get a 40X30 double stacker and place my G2 in the top since she already has a fairly large cage. Problem is we're plum outta extra $$ for a new cage. We have 12 birds, of the 12 ,8 are rescues. I am ok with all the birds except my husband paid for every one of them, sometimes way too much. His latest was taking out a cash advance check on a credit card (1,000.00) to get these amazons! Both have never been out of their cage sin 12 years...so they have major issues! I want to stop after I get that SC2 because I can get him for nothing but I can't find a double cage!! Any suggestions?

I have a special place in my heart for the Toos. We have all sorts of birds but the Toos are different. My baby is the U2, Sierra. We're attached at the hip<g>. If anyone has any suggestions that can help me, place send me and email or a post! We could get a separate cage but we'd have no room for our Christmas tree,....Oy. What am I gonna do?!!

<Babbling to myself>..

Far better to put your good heart and energy into finding other homes for the birds you see in need. Without money for a cage, you're most certainly without money for vet care since it costs a LOT more than a cage. Your home isn't the best place for any new bird, Beth. It's not fair or safe for the birds you already have. But you can surely help the bird by finding that home. Maybe someone here can help.

    Cages...

Postby gersfeld on Mon Oct 08, 2007 9:31 am

Yes I have searched EBay and craig'sl ist and a few other free classified sites. I have done local free cycles too.

I know that the attitude is that if the cage is too costly I shouldn't get the bird, but no bird we had ever went without vet care if they needed it. It's a long story why I am looking for a very cheap or free cage..too long to explain here.....

    Anyway, thanks for the suggestions,

    Beth

Make due cage for around 35.00

Try those play pens for dogs, you know the big octagon ones? They come in like 8 - 2 footx2foot pieces that unfold into a play pen for the dogs. Now have some imagination here, undo two of the last panels. place them on the bottom so your forming a rectangle cube with two each on both the front and back with one each on the sides. So you have a 4 foot by 2 foot good for Too's or the like. Wire the lower two into place so there is room to place papers underneath. For the top I would suggest some luan board and wire the back so you can open it from the top and lock the front with those carabeaners.

Good Luck, worked for me till I found a good cage.

Have you tried Freecycle for your area. I know someone here posted that they needed a large cage this past week and got one. I have given away several cages that way. Just a thought..
