Cage Question

Postby kriso on Sat Jun 09, 2007 11:10 pm

Well, it appears I will have to put my babies back in cages. My B&G is becoming a bit agressive and I don't really trust him to not hurt my U2. He never has, but I've been told it can happen once that first hormonal season happens (they are both 8 years old now).

So, in the past she was very much a houdini bird. She would disassemble door handles, then figured out a combination lock, then when I foiled that she started to take the bolts off the food bird doors and then the top to squeeze out to of the cage. That is why I gave up on her in a cage.

I have room to give them both a double wide macaw cage...but wondering what brand would be the best for her not to get out of. I also would need one that does not come fully assembled as it is impossible to manuver a welded cage down a mobile home hallway. Thanks in advance for the advice.

I know someone who can sell double macaw cages for less than $600 ea... plus with discounts if you buy more than one... However, they live in Miami and don't ship... so if you could take a trip (or consider meeting part way), or knew someone who may be coming up, you could get a great deal! If you are interested I can send you the contact information for this person.

If you can't get to Miami...that does sound like a great deal...plus a drive down to the Keys would make it a great vacation.(Cyndie dreaming here)..You can get the King's cages...they don't come assembled....or look on ebay...they have some nice ones...What I have been doing with some of my doors...and those little top flappy things that open up on the King's Napoleon cages...those orange thingys that you get at Lowe's to keep electrical cords together...kind of have alligator teeth...really heavy plastic...I use those...I only have one cockatoo that can chew through those...and amazingly...it's not an umbie...it's a LSC....the other birds just ignore them....(big bad orange thingy that going to eat me)...
I sure wish I knew what to call those....

Next time I'm at her house, I'll snap a few shots. I went with the corner cages rather than the double macaw cages that sparked my interest though.

I wish I could get a new cage for Baggins. When we got him, for reasons that are no longer valid, we put him in Bingo's older Grand Lakes cage and put Bingo in the new one that we ordered off the Internet. In short order Bingo managed to break the welds and remove two bars from the front side of the dome. He obviously thought that was great fun and was ready to try for more. So, we returned him to his marvelous Grand Lakes cage (which have now unfortunately gone out of business). I would love to have another Grand Lakes cage. :( We were able to weave some small-link stainless steel chain back and forth around the bars, thus holding the bars that got removed in place and Baggins is living in that cage now. Not being a 'too, he doesn't try to dismantle the cage. But that spot isn't exactly attractive.

Anyway, I'm never going to order another cage off the Internet without having seen a sample of the brand. I guess that means whenever we decide to replace the cage we will be checking out bird shows.

They are called zip-ties and they work great!

Kriso- Where is your city in MN? I am in Bemidji (Northern) and I go down to Stillwater about once every 2 months. There is a guy from Elko, MN with a store called "Love on the Wing." He has great deals and would give me a discount since I am also a vendor at these sales. If you want, I can put in a good word for you.

I will be there on July 14th. You can also check out his website and give them a call for pricing, but he can give you a better deal at the sale I believe. The website is www.loveonthewing.com

It should be an easy fix to have the rods welded back in place. When I built my cages for my parrots I drilled holes in the square tubing then welded them in place that way even if the weld is broken the bar is still secured.

It is made out of 1/2 square tubing. 1/4 inch round bar. I still have to finish the perch for the top then have it powder coated. Total cost for the project is 135 bucks
