kiwi the bare-eye is here!

Postby bostonbudgie on Sun May 20, 2007 9:12 am

Kiwi was brought up to my house by his owner. She adapted right away: singing, dancing, talking and eating out of my hand.
however,,,,,my tiels are not too crazy about the situation. Two of my hand fed adult tiels are hissing and grouchy over this new bird....
I am giving the tiels one on one to make sure they know they are still the top birds. Kiw does a shrill call which sends the birds flying...
thoughts? ideas?
kiwi is happy here with all the attention in the bird room/dining room but the tiels aren't too happy. I want to give kiwi a chance. this is only day one, so....

Definitely too early for any decisions. Everyone needs some adjustment time. I imagine your 'tiels will be watching you too, to make sure you aren't going to change with them.

We have had Uri (our rescue Sennie) since October of last year.

He and Sera (Goffin's) still HATE each other. Hatred......bitiing.

So they have seperate times to play and it all works out fine. I'm not expecting them to be best buddies.....they are my buddies!

bare eye

Postby bostonbudgie on Mon May 21, 2007 4:40 pm

Kiwi is doing fine. I went to a nice bird shop to talk to the owner for suggestions. I picked up some really nice food for her plus new toys and stuff to repair some of her old toys. I also bought the tiels toys too.
the tiels are calming down. I give all the birds their quality cuddle time. Please keep your words of encouragement. I want this to work out. I felt sad last night .My husband and I talked about Kiwi and birds and how we will make it work.

It sounds like you are doing well. Sometimes I think that they can sense whether you believe or don't believe that it will work out and act accordingly. In other words, a positive attitude is better. :)

I need help!

Postby bostonbudgie on Tue May 22, 2007 6:14 am

things were fine yesterday morning but at 5;00 kiwi was sporatically vocalizing. I do not mind her squawks. I like bird noise
HOWEVER my tiels were flipping out. they were crashing & banging into things. I am so afraid I will have a bad injury or causality regarding kiwis alarms. Chew toys and nuts keep kiwi busy but on the down time i am afraid her squawks will send my beloved tiels in afrnzy. help help HELP!

This is why I dont have little birds around bigger ones- I know I will get slammed for this but they in my experiences deal well together. Any way of seperating in different rooms?

tiels

Postby bostonbudgie on Tue May 22, 2007 6:05 pm

I took the tiels upstairs but when Kiwi calls no matter where they are and can hear her it sets them off.
I have fun with Kiwi but my tiels come first....

Kiwi's owner

Postby bostonbudgie on Wed May 23, 2007 8:03 am

I called kiwi's owner last night with heavy heart. I can not tell you how sad, stressed and guilty I feel. I had so much fun with Kiwi yesterday.I gave her a bath, played basketball with her and catch. she loves the attention and I love giving it to her.If she was my only bird things would be perfect.
However, my tiels are stressed to the max even when I brought them upstairs. The house echos so there is no way to avoid Kiwi's "calls'.
I thought I had everything figured out regarding adopting Kiwi. I read lots of books, talked to people, etc.. etc.. but I did not figure this aspect.
I am heartbroken.
Eddie, my little "special" tiel has to come first....

I know how you are feeling. Itusually always stresses my birds when I have added a new one to the flock. I always try to keep my guys where they have always been and keep the new one away so they get adjusted to the sounds, etc for awhile.

When I took in the 3 foster birds the amazon was the one who caused the most stress because of his noise level. He can be very loud. And I am in a townhouse, so not alot of room, however those 3 had always been together so they are all together on a different level. I really don't want to break them up since they get along so well. I did try to find homes for them, but none that I felt comfortable with so they will stay with me unless someone special comes along that can provide them with a better situation.

I would try to keep the new one in a bedroom or a distance away from the tiels to give them all time to adjust.

I have a friend who has about 30 birds all in a huge bird room she added on to her house. She has budgies, love birds, tiels, conures, amazons, cockatoo's etc all together. When she is home most of the teils and little guys are out flying or walking around. They all seem to just get along. She has taken in birds that really needed homes and just makes it work. And it is so awesom to see her with all of them. She loves each and every one of them.

kiwi

Postby bostonbudgie on Sat May 26, 2007 1:29 pm

I took Kiwi back to her owners. :( I am hoping maybe her absense will renew their relationship with her. I showed the owners the "tricks" I taught her, all the new (and refurbished) toys to keep her busy and the wonderful food mix that she enjoyed so much. I am going to make a point of at least visiting her once a month to play with her (they live over an hour & 20 minutes away)I already miss her but my teils seem calmer and happier.
My original plan was to have this wonderful 'bird" room for all my birds and (more). unfortunately I found out every thing echos in the house even upstairs with the doors shut!
