Hi All,

Long time since I been here- I been back in school (going for a nursing degree) figured it was a calling because of how much time i have been in the hospital/dr's offices for the past year..ha!

Anywho- Memorial weekend is coming up, and Since I just have puddles now, I don't want to leave her home and have someone from my family come check on her in the AM and feed her.
So I am thinking of taking her along- except this is the 1st trip she will be on.

We are going up to the Woods- my Inlaws have cabin up there. They said it will be fine- they have 2 Parakeets,
I am trying to think of a Suitable carrier for puddles, that She can stay in. I am thinking one of those Adventure Back Packs- I will be taking her Fishing with us etc. The weather up there gets to be around 70 during the day, and kinda cold at night, but she will be indoors.

Anyone got any suggestions for me? I want to have a good time on this trip, I need the time "away" you could say. but I don't want to be worried all the time either that something might happen to Pud.

They do have a mosquito net that I can purchase to go over the cage as well, Not that there are Squito's up there, but last year they had tons of lil baby flie things that attacked My Dog, and left lil red bumps on his belly....so that is a concern of mine too

What would you guys do in my case? any advise is appreciated

Thanks!

Tawny

    Tawny:

Is it just going to be you and hubby? Any kids you need to worry about? Is Puddles clipped? Are you going to have a play stand for her. The Adventure Pack would be OK as long as it's just to sleep in. You know you can buy those pop up screen houses. They pop up just like a laundry hamper. Very new thing. I'll see if I can find one.

Will you have her in a harness? If she is clipped, my concern would be her becoming scared and ending up in the water. If she is flighted, my concern would be her taking off and you not being able to get her back. If she were in that screen house, no problems. No bugs, no taking off. She will probably have a ball but there are things you need to take care of.

Tawny, with some planning, I'm sure you can do it. I've heard of people who even go on hiking vacations with their birds. I'm not sure of what the name of the product was they used, but I know the carrier was on their back. I'm sure that you will get some suggestions from others who have traveled with their birds. I used to take Dusty in a travel carrier to the family house on the lake, and for awhile even kept a "vacation cage" there all the time so I didn't have to carry it back and forth. It was a "parrot cage" but smaller than I would want my bird to live in on a daily basis.

    Hey Tawny...and Puddles
Sounds like fun....Bev brought up some good points..I would definitely make sure she is clipped...I am slipping, but I forget what kind of too Puddles is...
For sleeping...I'd get one of the Vari Kennels...with the metal bars on the sides instead of plastic...you can drill a hole to put a perch in...that way she'll have some privacy...If she's used to a harness...that would be OK for the outdoors while you're with her..
Let us know how it works out....Glad to hear you're back in school...it was going to be Respiratory wasn't it? Take care.....Hi to Puddles....

Just want to point out a couple of things. 1. Just because you've done something for a long time, doesn't mean you are good at it. Case in point: My parents were married for 58 years and they sucked at it. 2. People who give up too much for their birds and don't have some kind of life usually end up resenting their birds. Those birds will likely end up being dumped. You need to find a balance that works for you and your bird/s.

    Bev

Tawny, you work out the kinks and have a great time. That Aviator harness is great. I put one on Zazu a couple of times without too much difficulty. It comes with a CD on how to put it on. It won't help for this trip but you might want to start getting her used to a harness. You need to desensitize them to it first. It's all in the CD that comes with it.

So Bev...laying on top of the bird and wrestling it into the harness isn't the way?? Gee....I must have read that wrong....LOL....
Sometimes maybe a bird sitting trade off would work for some...Rick and I just don't go at the same times...except for day kayaking trips...stuff like that...I have to get away....and do at least one bird event a year...gotta have that fix....I'm taking Susan's class this month...so I'll be asking you questions....fer sure...

    Cyndie:

The first 3 lessons are pretty straight forward. You get the lessons on Friday. I read it over and over, high-lighted stuff I wasn't sure about, asked questions until I understood and then did the homework. It is amazing stuff, Cyndie. Right now I'm reading Paul Chance's First Course in Applied Behaviour Analysis. Ask me how much fun that is. LOL

    When does the class start?

I'm so glad this subject came up.
We're going to be going on a week long cabin in the mountains kind of vacation the end of June. We figure Pearl, the Goffin's, is mellow enough to take with us. But Baby Boy, the Sun Conure, well, mellow isn't what I would use to describe him. But he's so attached to just me and is learning to trust for the first time in a long time, I think.
I guess that's off topic. I'm just at a loss what to do about him.
I'm still glad the topic came up!
    Love 'em all.

BeckyBoo, I think they would be better off going with you. They can adapt to change- its the no Mom that they freak about.

I'm worried too that he'll freak and we'll have to start back at the beginning. (FYI, he's a 6 yo rescue, my first bird, and I've had him all of 2+months)
But there will be other people staying there and he can be just a
    teeny weeny
bit noisy at times. I know, hard to believe with a Sun.
And he will not no way let anybody but me touch him or get too close.
(He came that way  Instant bond both directions.)
    Love 'em all.

Becky, are these birds clipped. My main concern would be a safety issue if the other people around are not bird people. Even a clipped bird can get into trouble if it got outside. Even more trouble because he/she would be an easier target for a predator.

The noise issue should be your last concern because birds are usually quiet in a new environment until they get the lay of the land so to speak. LOL

    Bev

Cyndie, it's a long weekend here. I'll be around all day tomorrow, until 3 on Sunday and all day Monday. If you need a radiologist to interpret, I can get one to do that for you but I'm not back to work until Wednesday.

Did I tell you I had a dinner here in my 1 bedroom apartment. Susan and Barb Heidenreich were here and 7 other thread leaders from the PBAS list. It went well but it was a lot of work. I'll have to tell you all about it. The workshop they did here was amazing. Next year is going to be even better. Speakers will be Susan, Bob Bailey and Phung Luu.
