Bad water bottle habits!

Postby Mom2Sera on Sat Mar 03, 2007 8:38 am

Okay....so Sera is waterbottle trained. I love it!!

But now, her new game is to SHOVE her pellet up the water bottle spout!! I have no idea what started this!

So now I have to check the spout all the time to see if it's clogged. Then I have to soak it in hot water to unclog it!

What in the world is this new facination with this??? Goofy little bird.

I can tell when she does it because I come home from work and she's whining. She's whining because she's thirsty!!!!

I LOVE the water bottle, Gloria.....don't get me wrong.

This is the first time since we've had her that she started doing this. I have no idea why she started!

I'm going to send an email to her breeder and see if any of his do this since all of his birds are water bottle trained.

I switched Uri over to the water bottle since I hated having a bowl in there. He'd get it messy the insant I'd put it in there for him so this (in my opintion) is so much cleaner.

    I don't know why she's being such a brat. Oh wait a minute, yes I do. It's because she's a Goffins!!

Okay....so the breeder laughed and said it was a first for him, too! Of course my little Sera bird has to be different.

He told me to try moving the bottle first and if that didn't work to try a bigger tip next.

So off to move the bottle!

My Goffins, Bingo, cockatoo that he is, loves all things mechanical. One day he decided it was time to go to work on the water bottle. He managed to lift the bail that supports the bottle up and over. Of course the bottle then flipped over and hung downward. I considered myself lucky that it didn't just completely fall off, but the tube remained through the ring, and kept it from coming off.

I've got him outsmarted now, though. I put a piece of velcro on the outside of the bottle (the side away from the cage) level with where the bail rests. After the bail is in place, I take the matching piece of velcro and attach it to the velcro on the bottle with the bail wire sandwiched in between them. So, now he can't quite get enough leverage to force the bail up because it's being held by the velcro. Hehehehe At first I think it ticked him off, but now he's decided to ignore it.

    Crazy little guys.......

So I left the bottle where it is....but I moved the food bowls around. I put her pellet bowl away from the bottle and moved her 'fresh' bowl (veggies, nuts, beans.....just fresh snacks) next to the water bottle.

We'll see......she's screaming her fool head off at me now since she's not out. She'll come out later.....but right now, I'm taking a break from the kitchen. I'm making a big turkey dinner. Not too sure why.....but I just felt like it!! So the kitchen is a mess and I have pots and pans everywhere. So I do'nt like her being out there when I have the stove on....since she's flighted and all.
