We were concerned with that to, but decided that it was best due to the problem with being able to clean it off if it were anything other than a hard surface. Also with rodents & such around, the concrete should keep them out as well. Again remember that ours is in our front yard (roughly 2 acres in front of house) so I have been mandated that it must look nice. We talked with the guy we will get to pour it, once it warms up & he will pour a 10' circle of aggragate concrete that will be 4" thick. Two inches below ground level & two above. Then we will make another 12 to 18" area around the pad for plants & such. Then when we hose the pad off it will run onto the planted area. He will also make sure that the pad will flow water outwards. Can't think what they call that. The aviary stands up about an inch or so, so you can hose it easily.
I really wish I could have done a dog type kennel aviary. I could have done it much bigger & except for the concrete much cheaper as well, but the neighbors would have flipped out. They may flip over this one, but don't really care. It's easier to ask for forgivness, that it is for permission! It will be nice.
They didn't want the ducks for the pond we share & now they are the ones that feed them the most, lol.
