I live one hour north of columbus. Could you tell me what city you have seen them in? I actually saw a link to the cockatoo resuce about a month ago and we really like the size etc. We just had no idea where to get the carport frame from :?:

We do have both home depot and lowes nearby. As for critter proofing we are going to talk to steve hartman about it and get advice. We will actually see him tomm. so we will get more ideas then.

I would love to see pictures of someone who has done it themselves as well !

We got tons and tons of toys too ! These shows are so much better than Martis' IMO. And we got food. ANd we talked to our breeder Steve Hartman. We had to give him our deposit for our new baby :D I can't wait to bring her home. DO you go to the Medina show? It's normally even better. I like Nite Owl Aviary too. They always have good deals. Did you see the huge aviaries they had? I couldn't believe only 1500 for the large one. We are going to figure up how much we would have in making our own, because it might be cheaper to buy one of those. Hope fully someone posts about theirs so I know...... anyone??????

I know! I couldn't believe that the big one was only $1500!! We got our cage from those guys. It was $150 for a 22 x 24 x 34 with a play top. Such a deal!!!

I got The Aviator Harness from Steve today. We only live like 15 mintues from him so we'll be headed there this summer to hang out with the kids.

    What baby are you getting???

We don't make it up to the Medina one. Maybe some day we will! Need to let our wallet recoup after this one! lol

LOL we live about 40 min north of steve. We love going there it's so fun. We are getting a rosebreasted cockatoo baby from him. Right now they are only about 5-6 weeks old. We got our Umbrella cockatoo from him as well. She is harness trained and fully flighted. It's so much fun.

We spent alot today too but these are our two favorite shows of the year. Even if we dont' get much we still love going to shows.

    outdoor aviaries.

Postby Cheryl Hitter on Mon Feb 26, 2007 9:57 am

I was rereading all of the posts you guys responded with regarding this topic and was wondering about the flooring in an outdoor aviary. Chris, you mentioned pouring a concrete slab... would you worry about a fall? Maybe someone breaking a keelbone or wing? I was trying to figure what would be best... grass? ummm not sure about that either...

    Outdoor Aviary Floor

    Postby swindiana57 on Mon Feb 26, 2007 10:43 am

We were concerned with that to, but decided that it was best due to the problem with being able to clean it off if it were anything other than a hard surface. Also with rodents & such around, the concrete should keep them out as well. Again remember that ours is in our front yard (roughly 2 acres in front of house) so I have been mandated that it must look nice. We talked with the guy we will get to pour it, once it warms up & he will pour a 10' circle of aggragate concrete that will be 4" thick. Two inches below ground level & two above. Then we will make another 12 to 18" area around the pad for plants & such. Then when we hose the pad off it will run onto the planted area. He will also make sure that the pad will flow water outwards. Can't think what they call that. The aviary stands up about an inch or so, so you can hose it easily.
I really wish I could have done a dog type kennel aviary. I could have done it much bigger & except for the concrete much cheaper as well, but the neighbors would have flipped out. They may flip over this one, but don't really care. It's easier to ask for forgivness, that it is for permission! It will be nice.
They didn't want the ducks for the pond we share & now they are the ones that feed them the most, lol.

If you're usiing concrete flooring, you might want to try to devise your own...you can use the posts that are used in chain link fencing. The reason I'm saying this is that you'll want it to be shorter (heightwise) because a fall onto concrete can be fatal (not only broken keel bones, but if a bird is clipped, and/or has never really fledged, it's a real possibility that a bird can fall and break it's neck--I know someone whose bird did just that).

Lori at cockatoo rescue uses wood chips and you need to make sure they are not treated with anything.

    Aviary

    Postby swindiana57 on Mon Feb 26, 2007 11:39 am

I will have to give that some thought. maybe a flase bottom sorta. So that if either fall they will only go so far.

    Thanks,

    Re: outdoor aviaries/cages.

    Postby Sherri01 on Sat Oct 03, 2009 9:13 am

I have been looking into building my own outdoor avairy with the carports. I am running into a lot of problems with finding the right carports and the wire. I have found a few different sites which sell the zoomesh. I am not sure how this will work because I dont find anyone that has made thier avairies with this particular wire. I have done as much research on it as possible. I believe it to be the safest wire to use for my birds. I am not sure what it will cost and still waiting to get quotes back. I was at a zoo called claws and paws and that is what they used on their outdoor avairies. Does anyone else know anything about this particular wire? It is suppose to be flexible and durable. BIrds of any kind are not suppose to be able to chew through it. I am looking into as many different options as I can. I never leave my birds outside unattended and they are in my home at night. I live in town and don't trust the neighborhood kids. Any information would be helpful. Thanks for your comments.
