Frances laid her first egg!

Postby Rachael and Frances on Tue Feb 06, 2007 1:52 pm

Hi guys,

Does anybody remember me and my M2 Frances?

She dropped her first egg just 2 nights ago! I went to clean out her sleeping cage and noticed a broken shell on the floor.

Frances seems to be fine - cuddlier than usual. But my question is, should I be feeding her extra protien or anything? And how often will a bird usually lay once she starts?

Any info you could give would be dead useful.

Thanks,
Rach and dat bad Fanny-Too

she could lay 3-4 eggs, just watch her and make sure she is getting a good selection in her diet. if you get them and they are not broken (like if she tries to nest) do not pull them, let her sit on them and get it out of her system, she knows when to stop sitting. Also, you could get ceramic eggs to help with this.

Sure, I remember you and Frances!

You might add some foods high in calcium to her diet for awhile to make up for what goes into the egg shells.

Hi Rachael....funny...I just got my program for the Victoria festival in yesterday's mail....so I did think about y'all recently...
I would make sure that she gets some added calcium...greens....crushed up baked egg shells...things like that...and watch how you handle her....no petting on the wingys...neck...things that she can perceive as sexual advances....
Good to see a post from you..

    laying...

Postby Rachael and Frances on Tue Feb 06, 2007 8:23 pm

Thanks for the advice guys! The thing is, right now she's been finicky as all get go. She doesn't want anything but toast and veggies. (The veggies are ok, but the toast isn't so good)

I even tried making her a special treat of a scrambled egg today and she snubbed it - as well as raw carrots, and grapes. Even cheese she snubbed.

And tonight she was fractious. I'm talking non-stop screaming from 3:00 onwards until we finally put her to bed at 6:00. She didn't want us to pat her, and when we let her come off the cat post for cuddles, she was aggressive to the point where we had to towel her and put her back in her cage for a time out.

Is excessive screaming or aggression signs that she is about to lay?

What about egg bound? ARe there signs to look for?

I've phoned my vet, but we keep missing each others calls, so any more info you guys could give would be well received.

and Cyndi, are you going to the symposium this year? I've moved to Nanaimo, so I'm only 1.5 hours away by car. I'd love to come and see you if you are going to be there.

    Rach.

I had a budgie that got egg bound once. She sat on the floor of the cage and kept trying to push. She had no mate, but I was pretty sure what was happening so I rushed her to the vet and an x-ray showed that she was egg bound. The vet sedated her and nicked her and delivered the egg. He gave me antibiotic for her and she did fine.

Since Frances has already laid one egg I doubt that she is egg bound, but she just may have more to lay.

Thanks for all of your great advice. And thanks to SueB - I was so worried about this Egg Bound thing, that you've put that worry to rest.

Cyndie, did you happen to notice that my avatar is "that photo"? And is it a coincidence that Frances got into my box of photo's and that was the only one she chewed? I'd say it was downright premeditated.
