Dumb Question?

Postby suebb on Mon Jan 15, 2007 3:09 pm

This colder weather has really got my arthritis ouching me. My shoulder was hurting so much that I grabbed a tube of Ben Gay and rubbed it in good. Then I went to the living room where the birds are and realized that I sure could smell that Ben Gay. I imagine it's the menthol in it that smells, right? Is this bad for the birds to smell?

Toxicity of terpenes to birds

Postby rpavlis on Mon Jan 15, 2007 6:21 pm

Many terpenes such as camphor and the like seem to have substantial toxicity.

There is an interesting web site that has a lot of references to things that are toxic to birds:

http://www3.sympatico.ca/davehansen/avpoison.html

I suspect that BenGay has mostly camphor.

There are some nasty things that people put in stuff, many of which do not do us good either. I would worry about giving birds too much exposure to stuff like this. (Maybe I am overly cautious?)

Thanks, Robert. I bookmarked that site. I didn't let the birds near me this afternoon, and I washed my hands well after applying the BenGay. Bingo and Baggins didn't show any effects, but I think from now on I'll just use it at bedtime if I'm hurting, when the birds have gone down for the night.

I was glad to see your response because it must mean that you haven't lost power from the winter storm.

I decided to go back and check the label. Isn't that a novel idea! It does appear that the ingredient I was smelling is menthol. I think I'll still not use it around the birds, though.

That does sound like a good idea, but those two dachshunds sit there looking at the tub and I can just hear them thinking "Isn't she ever going to come out?" Poor little Brandy would have a heart attack if I shut the door between her and me. She has separation anxiety issues. LOL
