That looks like my hand since menopause. LOL

I love when people adopt instead of buying a baby. There are so many birds out there needing homes now.

WOW, it sounds like you both have jumped in with all fours! Who needs to stick a toe in and test the water, when you can jump?! LOL

I sure hope ya'll know what you're getting into....not biting off more than you can handle, and all. It's so easy to be swept away.....there are so many in poor conditions and neglect. I know your hearts are in the right place, and will do what is best.

Have you been able to visit some of the other bird rescues and sanctuaries? The Gabriel Foundation? http://www.thegabrielfoundation.org/AboutTGF/ The Tropics? http://www.parrotrefuge.com/domeupdate.html The aviaries, flights, the dome rain forest ....it's just amazing what a person can do to develop a place of refuge for birds. Good luck to you both!

How do you keep each quarantined from the other? I would never consider boarding my birds because of the risk factor. What are you're thoughts on boarding birds and the spread of disease?

All under control- We have research and planned the building out- We would never put any bird in harm-or jump into anything WE cant handle.

Cami,

You're SO right...its a bunch to bite off. Have you seen the flights?
http://www.thegabrielfoundation.org/pdf ... lights.pdf These were the first to open. We have a lot....and some big detached ones. If I remember they are 40x80? really nice for the birds.

We do very little rescue...thank goodness! Rescue:life threatening conditions...such as bird is facing euthanasia or death within the next few hours...like Mackie U2 when he'd been burned and was going to be put down. We currently have a group of lories and other birds that were in really bad conditions(and about 100 birds before that from 2 hoarding situations) and we have unfortunately lost a few of the lories....all have chronic IOD....very sad.

We do mostly rehoming, some sanctuary, long term foster care and a lot of education.

It takes a lot...every bird that comes to us gets vet checked..and that cost an average of $200 each and then we go from there. Then quarantine...in order to protect the current flock and the new birds coming into us as well. Then the food.....the food bill would blow you away.

I have seen a lot of well intentioned people get in over their heads. Its very easy to do...and all with good intentions...so your thoughts are well grounded. The Tropics for one....they got in way deep...and were suppose to be no more. I'm not sure how or why they are still operating.

Its never easy doing parrot welfare. Its 24/7 ....you never get a break so you need to be the type that that's ok. One thing that Phoebe Linden said to me when I saw her last year was....it was fun for the first 10 yrs....now its work. It can be so true.

Talking about boarding....Patti really raised the bar with Avian Suites...doing it right. http://www.birdboarding.com/

hugs,

I guess I've never really thought about boarding my birds...because of diseases...How would you handle the colder weather conditions...would each enclosure have to have a separate HVAC system? It would almost have to be like a negative pressure room....so that any bacteria would stay in and not blow out...
Out of my flock...only one is a true rescue...the rest are rehomes...big difference...
The flights at TGF are wonderful....Are the beams made from redwood? I know it would have to be some wood...untreated, but able to endure...I know the wire is wrapped around the center beams so the big beaks can't have them for lunch...

Ah...the beams ;-0 They were SUPPOSE to be above the wire but the contractor did it wrong, ordered wrong or something...so we ended up with those wonderful expensive chew toys. To solve that we wrapped them in wire but we do keep an eye out in case inquisitive birds decide to hang on on the wire.

If birds have had ALL their medicals done...you know the living conditions they are in...such as no new non quarantined birds coming in...and your flock is checked as well...AND you know the vet/s involved and medicals are up to date...then boarding birds but still keeping them separate (separate rooms...flights) might be done reasonably safe....but no guarantees.

Take a look at Avian Suites. Patti is an RN and she really set it up right (which unfortunately was also very costly).

http://www.birdboarding.com/faq.html

"Q: How Will You Keep My Bird(s) Safe At Your Facility?
A: Avian Suites™ has carefully worked with veterinarians and bird care specialists to create an environment which meets the health and safety needs of birds. Your bird(s) will stay in a private room with only birds from your household. Our rooms are maintained at temperatures slightly warmer than normal household levels to help your birds adjust to the stress of being transported and finding themselves in new surroundings. Each room is ventilated with its own isolated system. Room air is filtered through an ultra violet sterilization unit which destroys bacteria and viruses.

Our technicians follow clinical procedures for bird handling developed by avian veterinarians. Each technician is clothed in disposable scrubs and shoe covers which are left in the room in which they are used."

Ultra violet sterilization...I think is what we ended up installing in the entrances to our quarantines.

Wow...where is Patty located? That's pretty impressive...A place like that would give you peace of mind...the only other alternative would be to have Cami come and sit for me...LOL...Rick and I haven't been away at the same time in over 11 years....it's just what works for us....with all of the critters...I'd have to hire a team of pet sitters...LOL..
