Cami,
You're SO right...its a bunch to bite off. Have you seen the flights?
http://www.thegabrielfoundation.org/pdf ... lights.pdf These were the first to open. We have a lot....and some big detached ones. If I remember they are 40x80? really nice for the birds.
We do very little rescue...thank goodness! Rescue:life threatening conditions...such as bird is facing euthanasia or death within the next few hours...like Mackie U2 when he'd been burned and was going to be put down. We currently have a group of lories and other birds that were in really bad conditions(and about 100 birds before that from 2 hoarding situations) and we have unfortunately lost a few of the lories....all have chronic IOD....very sad.
We do mostly rehoming, some sanctuary, long term foster care and a lot of education.
It takes a lot...every bird that comes to us gets vet checked..and that cost an average of $200 each and then we go from there. Then quarantine...in order to protect the current flock and the new birds coming into us as well. Then the food.....the food bill would blow you away.
I have seen a lot of well intentioned people get in over their heads. Its very easy to do...and all with good intentions...so your thoughts are well grounded. The Tropics for one....they got in way deep...and were suppose to be no more. I'm not sure how or why they are still operating.
Its never easy doing parrot welfare. Its 24/7 ....you never get a break so you need to be the type that that's ok. One thing that Phoebe Linden said to me when I saw her last year was....it was fun for the first 10 yrs....now its work. It can be so true.
Talking about boarding....Patti really raised the bar with Avian Suites...doing it right.
