Bingo and the Bead

Postby suebb on Mon Jan 08, 2007 5:29 pm

Bingo has this thing about trying to put two toys together. He's always trying to hook them together in some fashion. Well, he had detached a big plastic bead from some toy and it had been laying around in his cage for a couple of days. He has this other toy on his cage made of pvc that has a part that rotates like a windmill. This afternoon I saw him with his beak through the bead, playing with the windmill, looking like he was trying to attach it to the windmill (no way). He had been playing with this for about 20 minutes and I began to worry that maybe the bead was stuck on his beak, although he was evidencing no distress. So we decided that we would offer him a treat and see if the bead would come off. Sure enough when my husband approached his cage, he dropped the bead and waited for his treat. I think he just liked wearing the bead on his beak.

I told Bingo he was weird but it didn't faze him. LOL I think he viewed the bead as a tool. And yes, it was on the floor of the cage, but he could reach it without putting his precious little feet on the grate because it was lodged up against the cage wall. All he had to do was cling to the walls and reach. LOL

These little birds crack me up- Ellie waits till I re-hang everything then as I finish cleanning bird room- I hear them all hit the floor of her cage. And the sweet gentle voice " I Love You Lori" "Bad Birdie" amazing she has not picked up the phrase SillyBirdie.

Annie is always trying to connect things too. It's so funny to watch her grab a little foot toy that has a hole in it and try to shove a bigger toy thru the hole!!

You know they talk about intelligence and using tools being a sign of it - well I think they ought to pay more attention to the fact that birds do the best they can with tools, especially considering they only have two limbs! I think they are aware of the concept of the use of a tool to accomplish tasks. And I know a lot of birds have been taught to use a spoon.

Yogi has used the pointy end of one of his old feathers to scratch his head or pick his ears! LOL He'll switch it from foot to foot to reach all sides.

Bingo does that too! Then I'll see him try to poke it through openings in toys.

I put a rag on the end table and Annie will 'dust' the table for me!!! Too bad I can't put any Pledge on it.
And you should see her with her Bullet Proof nut holder. She will hold on to it with her beak, stick her leg in one of the holes, grab a nut with her foot and bring the nut to her mouth. Sometimes it takes her a LONG LONG time but she's a patient little girl. I LOVE watching her.

As I said, Ellie is fast at wallpaper removal. She loves the hide a nut toys-it keeps her busy for at least an hour.

Bingo likes working nuts out of things too. That reminds me, he hasn't had one of those toys in his cage in awhile. I'll have to go look for one.

One day I let Annie out of her cage, she wouldn't come to me right away. She kept strutting on top of the cage, running away from me. I mistakenly left her alone for about 15 minutes and when I came back a big portion of paint was removed from my wall!!! I spent the next 2 hours piecing together the little paint chips to make sure she didn't swallow any of it!!! I was so pissed, what took her 15 minutes (probably less than that!) to destroy took me 2 hours to put back together!
