Shrimp and our avian friends

Postby rpavlis on Sat Jan 06, 2007 9:31 am

I made some paella. I got a mixture of all sorts of sea food from the grocery. I sauted it in olive oil with onions. Unfortunately for me I am allergic to shrimp. It takes two or three shrimp to make me sick, there seems a threshold effect. I picked out all the shrimp after it was sauted and before adding the other ingredients (basically tinned tomatoes and rice.) I also added pepper flakes and some saffron. (Has any purchased any lately? I think it should be spelled $affron.)

I fed the shrimp to the birds in their normal morning meal. It was amazing how they ate them. I guess this really would be a good high protein food for about all types of parrots.

By the way, the paella was delicious. I should see if the birds like it!

Well, I'm glad to read this. I have been a little leery of letting the birds have any shrimp. I was worried because they are sort of a scavenger animal and I have worried about possible contamination.

What a relief

Postby jjoe on Sun Jan 07, 2007 9:00 am

When I saw the post was from Robert, I was afraid it contained information about avoiding shrimp for the kids! My greys LOVE shrimp and fish and salmon. My greatest concern is finding and removing all of the debris before the ants do. For some reason, I can't rely on the cats to get everything they drop. LOL

I agree, my grey loves salmon. She's not too big on shrimp, but she'll take a bite or two. I was really surprised that she loves salmon so much, though. :)

 We have 4 Min Pins and 2 toy poodles, they dont miss a thing, even pull the trays out to clean and lean in to lick grates. Dont fear we have bird room gated off, after African grey was sitting nose to nose greeting one of them.

Paella

Postby rpavlis on Sun Jan 07, 2007 1:48 pm

Yesterday after I made and ate the paella I began to get symptoms from food allergy. I checked the left over paella, and discovered that what I had thought was imitation lobster was actually the real thing!

It seemed to be really good food, so I gave the birds some. (Even though it contained all that lobster that always causes me problems.) Most of them were really fond of it. I thought the squid might not suit them, but wendell just devoured it.

I saw an interesting thing on a Spanish language nature program a while back that showed cockatoos eating snails and crustaceans that they were catching along the sea shore. The snails that they could not get out of their shells they demonstrated their extreme intelligence by putting them on the ground, picking up rocks, and then flying above the rock and bombing the snail with the rock to break its shell! I wondered why they did not just drop the snail. Maybe that would not have broken the shell.

I've watched gulls drop oysters on rocks to break them open.
