Do you know if those Himalayan Salt Crystal lamps are bird safe? I got one for Xmas. It says it maintains a constant negative ionizing process and that's the part I'm wondering about. I thought that was not good for birds.

I will not use it until I know for sure. Also is eucalyptus oil OK to use around birds. For example, in bath water.

Thanks
Bev

Salt lamps

Postby rpavlis on Sun Dec 31, 2006 5:44 pm

These things look very beautiful, do they not?

Basically all that they are is a lamp with a large block of crystaline salt. They vary in mass, some weigh several kilos. Unless there are aroma producing materials in the lamp, salt has an extraordinarily low vapour pressure. The only way one could get salt in the vapour phase is thus to heat it to hundreds and hundreds of degrees, and even then it is just salt. I have lots of lamps in my house, really too many, I do not have one of these, maybe I should add one to my already large assortment of lamps! I think it a bad idea to have these in areas of high humidity, because they will take on water and sort of "melt". If one have them in high humidity, one needs to have them on a lot.

I worry a great deal about volatile oils--there are some of them that are really toxic to birds. Candles with some of these oils are deadly. I do not know about eucalyptus.

Trust me Robert, you don't have to worry about high humidity in Canada although having said that it is raining right now. Hard to imagine for this time of year. My igloo is going to melt. LOL The lamp is a big block of salt with a little light inside. I just worry about the "constant negative ionizing process" it says the lamp does. How can salt do that? Anyway, I'm not taking any chances and I'm giving the lamp to my SIL.

And I won't use that oil either unless I know for sure.

Thanks Robert.

Do you suppose I've never seen a lamp like you are talking about because I live in Houston? LOL We are a bit on the humid side here. Hehehe
