Winter dangers

The weather prophets are providing us with very bad prophesies for this area. Bad weather can represent dangers for both birds and people. In parts of the US that have temperatures averaging around freezing there is the nasty frequent occurrance of ice storms that can result in no electrical power for days at a time, sometimes even weeks. Since most homes are heated with gas or oil furnaces that require electricity this means that there are severe heating problems. There are some very dangerous types of heaters that can help, they can cause fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Generators can help. It is a good idea to get one before the ice storm, best in summer time! Because after ice storms the companies that sell them typically double and triple their prices to take advantage of the people who need them.

If you live in the ice belt, think about what you will do with your bird(s) in the event of very long term power failure.

Gasoline powered generators can have problems too, be sure to use them outside so that carbon monoxide does not build up, and there is great deal of setting the fuel on fire and burning one's house down. The fire danger is dramatically reduced by using diesel engines, but they are much more constly than a gasoline one, but they also are MUCH more robust.
