Taking my U2 to a colder climate...need advice!

Postby Zoomom8 on Mon Nov 02, 2009 9:29 am

Greetings!I I have an Umbrella Too named "Kazoo" who is now 11 years old. Thanks to this website and much research, we were able to navigate through the "terrible 2's" of puberty (which went on for years)....we hung in there with consistency, didn't give up - we survived the horrible screaming, attitudes and even self mutilation (survived thanks to the help of wonderful Avian Vet Dr. Harris in Miami) and now he is our wonderful, happy Too again!! Just want to encourage those of you struggling!!!!

OK - my question is....we have always lived in warm So. Florida. We will soon be traveling to N.W. Georgia, where it is MUCH colder, and Kazoo will travel with me. What are safe temperatures for him to live in??? We enjoy the cooler temps, but I don't want Kazoo's room to get too cold for him. What are the temperatures we should aim for???? Also, there is a fireplace and we love to burn wood on cold nights. Should I always make sure he stays in a room away from the fireplace?? This is something totally foreign to me - yet I know their respiratory systems are fairly fragile.... info. would be greatly appreciated!! Thanx much!

Cockatoos can stand fairly cold temps (gang-gangs play in snow in Australia) as long as they get used to the decreasing temperature slowly so as to give them time to grow more down.

I would not burn anything in a house where there are parrots. Too dangerous as far as I'm concerned and as you said they have very delicate respiratory systems. Better not to take chances.

I wouldn't worry about it too much! The thing you have to consider is the humidity. When you move to an area that requires an outside source to heat be considerate that when doing this it also leaches humidity from the air. Get a Humidifier and keep it at least 45% when the heater is ON!

And yes I agree with Sally here, 2's actually like the snow, the play babies that they are... ha ha ha. As a matter of fact I take fresh fallen snow from outside (here in Michigan) and put it in the water dishes of all my birds to not only make it colder (because they like that) but also because they like to play with it!

2's are hardy birds and will adapt to what is around them. It gets cold at night in the South pacific where they come from on a regular basis. Doesn' t seem to effect their natural habitat.
