the right temp

If someone could tell me what temperatures are ok for a citron. i manage a garden nursery in arizona and its the time of year that the nights get down into the 40's, and doesnt warm up untill about 10 or so. is it ok for her to be in that type of cold? i keep her in the office where its warmer during the nights but in the morning i put her on her cage to eat and its cold. is this ok or should i wait untill its warmer to bring her out? i have read info on a site with pictures of their breeding too's in the snow! can they handle that? it just seems like they are more of a tropical bird. thank you for reading.

Healthy birds, acclimated, can be fine in a wide range of temperatures. There's quakers, conures, and other species, living in the United States, wild, from California all the way to New York! East to West, South to North! Birds who are out in the cold should have a way to keep warm (shelter, or some sort of heat source), and perhaps a higher fat diet. Exercise is a great way to keep warm.

My birds, depending on the time of year, are in temps from the low 50's to the high 80's. These being inside, temps, too! The main thing to watch out for is any sign of stress. If the bird is shivering, it's too cold. If the bird is panting, wings lifted, it's too warm. If the bird seems fine, then you might not need to worry. Just keep an eye on the bird.

I agree, but it's important first to know if the bird is healthy. A sick bird needs extra heat to have the energy to fight the ailment. If it's nearly time for your 'too's annual exam and bloodwork, you might want to have your avian vet do the physical now to be sure those chilly mornings are healthy for her. Birds in the wild have the energy of flight to warm themselves. A captive bird sitting in a cage is much more vulnerable. I don't take mine out (in crates) in temps below 60 and only when it's sunny and for no longer than a half hour.

    Thanks for asking, Jon.

Cover the cages at night to keep them away from drafts in your office (since you bring them in at night) and use heated perches, you should be just fine, C2's are also very hardy birds. Its NOT like its going below freezing in the morning when you bring them out. These birds like it on the chilly side anyway. Again you'd be surprised at their natural habitat. Remember these birds have been around 20 times long than man has been on this earth. They have the true answer to "Improvise - Adapt - and Overcome"
