Frances has lost her voice

Postby Rachael on Fri Mar 20, 2009 3:55 pm

Hello everyone!

I know it's been eons since I last posted here. So long in fact that I had to create a new account. I couldn't remember my last one.

For those of who you don't know me, I'm owned by a 15 year old M2 named Frances.

Today she seems to have lost her voice. She still speaks clearly, but when she really lets out the Moluccan scream, all that seems to be coming out is a squeak.
She has no other symptoms of sickness. Her feathers are fine, her droppings look normal, she is eating and drinking normally, and she is not lethargic at all.

Has anyone every heard of this? My husband and I have just gotten over wicked colds and our voices are still a little croaky.

I'm just not sure if I should be rushing her to the vet or not. Her avian vet is a boat ride away and at least a night in Vancouver, so I really don't want to have to go over there unless it's something to be concerned about.

Anyone ever heard of this?

PS - Hiya Bev!!! OMG how have you been?

Rachael, I'm the best I've been in a very, very long time. It's good to see you. You took Frances to the vet, right? I think you did the right thing.

How is married life? How have things been going? I still hang out here but it's hard to get the board going when people keep taking posters away from here.

Do you think it is really her voice ??? or is she imitating a noise she heard you guys make while sick? I had a rosy (galah) once that imitated a sneeze perfectly. And I rescued a maxi pionus last summer who had a very bad cough - he was so cute. His owner had just had a bad cold and cough. He picked it up very quickly and loved to do it. If I happened to cough I think it reminded him and he would do it. Just a thought. Hope there is nothing serious going on.

We took her to the vet, we couldn't get her in right away so had to wait 4 days before we could get her in.

She had a bit of inflammation at the back of her throat and we were given an anti-inflammatory for her. She's now fine and back to her old tricks.

Scootie, thanks for the suggestion, it was definitely not her imitating what she'd heard - she was unable to call us with her big ol' Moluccan voice, it came out scratchy at best, and for a couple of days she didn't make noise at all.

Bev, married like is wonderful!!! As is Island living. I really have very little to complain about these days.

Frances is even starting to get over her aggression. This year she has hardly had any real attacks against me. She bit me on the ankle once, but that's it. It's definitely the most calm she's been in spring in years.

It is so good that you took her in - - and I am very glad she is feeling better. I always feel so bad for them because they can't tell us when they don't feel well. You did good.

Not only can they not tell us, but they hide it when they are feeling unwell. If it hadn't been for her voice, I wouldn't have thought anything was afoot.

I'm just glad I found an avian vet here and didn't have to travel to Vancouver. He seems really nice too. I was really pleased with him.
