How long for digestion of food?

Postby flemishe on Sun Feb 08, 2009 1:01 pm

When a cockatiel eats, how long is it before we see the product in the dropping?

Also, I read that extra drinking can cause polyuria. How can I tell what is more than normal?

In a normal healthy 'tiel, their digestive tract will eliminate food in as short as 15 minutes. They have an extremely fast digestive system, but to know when current food is expelled, you'd almost have to feed them something they can't digest and time it. I don't think, but am not positive an excessive water intake would cause polyuria, but as 'tiels don't drink that much in the first place, I'd want to know how much or how often (s)he is drinking

Yes, excessive drinking can cause the effect of polyuria, as my hen shows.

USUALLY it is a sign of a bigger problem with the kidneys or liver. I would have both tested. I know my hen has liver disease that is slowly progressing, and may have spread to her kidneys. The vets have all agreed that there is nothing that can be done for her other than make sure she is eating a healthy diet of seeds, pellets, and fresh food, and making sure that she is having a good quality of life.
