Sick bird?

Postby flemishe on Sat Feb 07, 2009 10:40 am

Marlie had polyuria in December, and a test revealed gram negative bacteria, so she was put on Baytril. She was also molting at the time, which might have caused extra stress. She was also more tired and less vocal, but still eating, drinking, preening, etc. The Baytril seemed to do the trick.
Last weekend, she was having intermittent polyuria (sometimes no solids at all), diarrhea, and in the mix of it all sometimes normal droppings. She began molting again, and again seems less active and less vocal. She is still eating, but it doesnt seem to be as much. Her weight has dropped a little (4 grams or so).
The vet put her on Baytril again just as a precaution, but she wasnt retested for gram negative as I didnt want to take her in again--the experience is so stressful for her.
I noticed throughout the week that droppings were looking better, but then this weekend again they are back to intermittent polyuria, diarrhea, and normal droppings.
The vet seems to think all of this may be hormone related, and part of the egg laying cycle. He said they do get less active and eat a bit less during this time. I'm not sure what to think as she has not gone through egg laying even though she is almost 4. Any thoughts from the experts out there?

As of today, 1:00 PM, she hasn't touched her pellets. She happily still eats seed, brown rice, millet--the other stuff I give her though.

Was her kidney/uric acid levels tested? Or how about liver values?

Molting can be a stressful time for birds, which can lead to a change in droppings.

Hormones would/could do this as well as bacteria level can be elevated....Is she displaying any nesty or sexual behavior? (Paper shredding, arching her back making "peep noises", eating more calcium/water than usual?)
However...could you bring her poop sample to the vet to have to tested rather than bringing her in (?)

I haven't had her blood tested in quite some time to check kidney/liver levels. I will probably go that route if things dont change in the next day or so.

She did some massive shredding of a toy recently. I took it out as I thought I was encouraging the nesting behavior by allowing her to chew on it.
I took in a dropping last Monday, Feb 2nd and the vet said it had nothing but lots of positive gram bacteria.

Her droppings have been very broken into pieces, not coiled at all. Are these still considered normal? If so, what makes them coiled vs. broken up? Is it the amount she is eating?
I haven't noticed any of the sexual behaviors lately anyway.

Marlie's been experiencing some anorexia. She won't eat hardly anything unless we hand feed her. I think the Baytril is causing some tummy upset. She has eaten almond slivers (given her more than normal just so she would eat something) and millet and avicake, along with some sweet corn, but she wont touch her pellets unless my DH feeds them to her. I'm not going to give her the Baytril tonight and am going to make an appt tomorrow afternoon for her to see the vet. If her appetite stays depressed then I will know it's not the meds and will take her in.

Her feet are cold too. That has me wondering... She's acting playful and alert though.

Don't stop the medication unless the vet says to, you can cause more damage that way by causing antibiotic resistant bacteria.

You should call the vet in the morning, but don't stop the meds. Add the pellets to hot water to make them mushy and see if she will eat them that way. Sick birds don't always want what is good for them, we should feed them whatever they are willing to eat.

Any time you put a bird on any type of antibiotic, you should also start giving them bene-bac to counter the effects of the ab killing the gram positive bacteria. I know a lot of vets don't consider this, but mine always reminds me to start the bene-bac at the same time as the antibiotic.
