Hi my name is Chris and I just brought home a 3 month old cockatiel.I was told that it is a male but I am not so sure.
How can You tell for sure?I named Him/Her Chip. Chip is a Cinnamon Pied and just beautiful. Chip has a lot of spots under the wings does this mean male or female?
Thanks for any help I can get.

Thanks Rosie's Mom.
Chip is settling in very well. He is doing little chirps and has eaten some a few minutes ago.I think He will be a happy baby in a few more days after He gets use to His new home and away from the rest of His flock. There were 6 babies altogether in a big cage. Chip picked Me out I did not pick Him out .
Most of the babies would play with my hand but Chip steped up on My finger and would not get down, so He came home with Me.
I sure hope the love fest keeps up. LOL

I don't suppose you could find out what mutation Chip's mother is??? If she's not a cinnamon like Chip, then Chip is 100% female! If Chip's mother is a cinnamon, then it could go either way (genetics of mutations).
Generally speaking, males sing and have various types of chirps and love strutting off while females chirp and tend to have a single chirp. If he is a male it may take him a bit to settle in before he sings. If female, then he'll probably never sing!
Spots and bars don't really tell you anything.... unless the bird is over 1-2 years old (sometimes you can tell when younger, but some birds are later molters).

Awww, congrats on your new baby! don't worry......in time it's very likely he/she will show you his gender by his behavior! Welcome to you and Chip!
