Did she chew it first :?: Just kidding. I don't mean to take your anxiety lightly--just couldn't resist. While I don't know for sure, I would expect it's okay. I'm sure it's not a recommended "food" for birdies--too much sugar--but I doubt a little bit will be a problem. Moms are always worrying when their kids swallow gum 'cause of the old wives' tales of it gettng stuck in the kids' stomachs. Which is hogwash. If it was small enough for her to swallow, it should "come through" just fine. It's not like it will swell up or anything. So, I could be wrong and I'm just going on logic, but my vet told me that with the few, well-known excepting, my birds could have any food that was healthy for me. Gum is bad for the teeth but Rosie doesn't have teeth! So, unless she consumed a whole pack & therefore was at risk of a sugar rush, I think she'll be fine. I freaked when Buddy decided to sample my coffee after 11 years of totally ignoring it! I called the vet, all worried, and they told me a couple of sips shouldn't be a problem. Just to watch her, & call back if she started behaving abnormally--which she never did. I commented to the vet tech, "Why would she drink my coffee after all these years?" The reply? "Because she could." Just watch her to be sure she isn't acting strangely, in which case you should call the vet, but if she acts like Rosie, she's just giving you a hard time!

I usually just lurk on this thread as our cockatiel passed away almost two years ago,l but I just had to reply and say thank you for the laugh "because she could" our tiel Huey always tried things just for that reason and our Caique, Cisco will do anything his heart desires. Why? because he can :D :D . This is the attitude that most of our feathered friends have and is one of the most appealing things about them Just remember - in their eyes if you are enjoying it it must be good !!!

(and this is also why as their caretakers we must always watch them closely)

I called the Dr (her old one) and was told that she should be just fine that she would digest it but to make sure she didn't get ahold of it again. Her getting backed up is what I worried about too in addition to it being toxic. She was pooping just fine, had a good appetite and was being herself when I put her to bed which was 2 and a half hours after she ate the gum. I thought she was just shredding the box and since it wasn't in the foil wrappers I thought I would let her "shred the box" when I looked more closely and seen that she had 4 bites of it I freaked out!! I have been praying that she will be ok. And I am so angry at myself.

Thats weird I thought coffee was toxic to birdies too..

LoL, Freddy I thought that they would think it's good too if we are eating it but tonight when I was eating a carrot and I offered my Rosie a bite she ran from it like it was the biggest, meanest, scariest thing she has ever seen in her life. Silly Girl!

BTW is bad for birds...
Eddie will try to take a sip out of my tea and I will have a bloody heart attack when I see her doing this. Even though it is decafinated I want to kick myself for keeping my eyes off of her when it could have been something bad.
Sometimes I have these brain freezes (no excuse) when I'll be watching a movie, eating popcorn with the birds in the room. The salt in the popcorn almost killed Whook. So I have to conscientiously decide at that point "do I eat while I watch the movie" or "do I let the birds watch the movie with me and eat later". If I am eating a biscuit in the living room and I have a bird on my shoulder almost ALWAYS that little booger will grab a bite. They are quick.
So Rosie's mom, keep gum, chocklate and other naughty food waaaaay out of reach of Rosie. They are naughty and they are QUICK! REALLY QUICK!

I do that too with dinner. Like that other night I made pasta with garlic and mushrooms with garlic bread. I made sure to make Rosie her own pasta with no salt, garlic or mushrooms and her own piece of toast with no butter or garlic. But when we sat down to eat she didn't want her food she wanted mine. I ended up putting my food away till after I put her to bed, if I can't share my food with her that she wants I feel like I am teasing her so I just put it away instead. That is scary that salt from popcorn almost killed Whook  ... I honestly didn't know gum was bad, I didn't think she would eat it but I didn't know it was bad to have around her, I usually make a ball out of the wrapper for her and she plays with it for ever. Thank god today she is doing good.

Oh it's just like a spaghetti sauce and I throw in the garlic, mushrooms and chunks of tomatoes also. I just don't like spaghetti noodles so I put the twisty egg noodles in it instead with ground beef or I will make mini meatballs with lots of cheese in them.
