Postby mad mike on Wed Jan 14, 2009 2:17 pm

hi my wife and i are new to bird ownership. we got 1 cockatiel for xmas and i bought another for companionship of the first bird. we both love the birds. our question is the male who is about 2 months old has broken tail frethers, for about 3 weeks and we're not sure what to do. theres 3 broken. should we cut them in two, pluck them oor leave them alone. the closest bird vet is 100 miles. any help would be appreciated. thanks mike & joanne

ps. they have never bled

If they are not bleeding just leave them alone. Linus (one of my tiels) had a broken feather hanging for a few months and then it eventually fell off.How did your tiel break a feather is the big question.(?!)night frights? Agrressive cage mate?
I would recommend getting a couple of books about cockatiels to learn a bit about them :D

Hello and welcome to UAS! Congratulations with your new little bundles of feathers. It is common for very young tiels to break their tail feathers, they have to learn to move around while lifting and moving the tail at the same time. If the feather is hanging and cumbersome to the bird then snip it at the break point. If the broken feather is broken off then wait it out till they molt - a whole bunch of new feathers will be in soon. As for books, one of my favorites is Parrots for Dummies.
