Lutinos - Please Step Up!

Postby MFids on Mon Jan 05, 2009 2:03 pm

I know we have a few lutino female cockatiels on this forum, but any males out there??? I never thought about this before, but perhaps it would be of help in sexing lutinos! (don't know if it'd work with pieds, and I would doubt it). It would also be interesting to see if perhaps a lutino has another mutation (pied? pearl? split pied? - but again, don't know how well this would work)

What you need:
Your lutino cockatiel
A black light
One dark room
Camera

Insert bird into room, turning off all lights, and turning on a black light. See if you see any particular patterns or anything on your bird! Example below (not my bird - please click to enlarge!) of a 19 week old lutino cockatiel, believed to be female.

I would like to find someone who has a lutino male cockatiel for comparisons!

Anyone interested in this experiment and wanting to try it out??? Birds must be mature and over 1-2 years of age for this work out the best! (at least when comparing males)

I have noticed that lutinos are mostly females.....I hardly ever see any males. With my female, you can see the baring underneath her tail in the right light.....I even have her molted feathers with the baring proof on them!

When we are speaking about sex-linked mutations, yes most of them tend to be females rather than males. Not everyone can see the barring, and it'd be interesting to see what others look like under a black light!
