Cockatiel Breeding

Postby eblake38 on Sun Dec 14, 2008 6:26 pm

My tiels are still not laying eggs, but are going to the box all the time. With it being December, will she even lay eggs this time of year. Tiel breeding is new to me, as i have done larger birds before, and dont know much about tiel breeding. Can some of you tiel breeders give me some tips on how to get her to lay or push her in that direction, and yes i am sure its a female.

There is nothing you can do except provide lots of fresh foods, calcium, baths, and pleanty of daylight. If she is not ready to breed or the male and female are not bonded, you may not get eggs. Also, if she is under two years old, you could end up with problems.

Last year I went to the Parrot festival in Texas. One of the lectures was on cockatiel breeding behavior.
Teils will "date' for up to six months before they actually mate.
It sounds like the potential couple is checking out the honeymoon suite to see if it is suitable. The male will usually do the inspection first. I put carefresh bedding in the nest box. They will go in and chuck it out which means they are setting up house keeping duties.
Make sure they have plenty of calcium, fresh veggies and pellets/seeds.
    Just be patient :D

I have found that supplying the pair with moist birdie bread usually does the trick. ha
