Polyuria with droppings

Postby flemishe on Sat Dec 13, 2008 9:18 pm

Marlie has had this since this morning, and I think it might be related to the end of her molt. Could that be true? I posted about this issue last March, and within the day it was all normal, but she was at the end of a molt then too. It unnerves me to no end as I am highly sensitive to any changes due to the fact that we almost lost her 2 years ago in December because of some blockage she had. Anyway, she is eating and acting completely normal--just lots and lots of urine, and I'm noticing her drinking more.

Lately Rosie has had some poops that are just water and/or some that have a little tiny piece of poop in it with lots of water.. It's usually in the mornings and then a little later in the day they are all normal again. As a matter of fact that happened today and another time a few days ago.

Re: Polyuria with droppings--Update

Postby flemishe on Mon Dec 15, 2008 6:24 pm

Had an appt first thing this morning with her vet as the polyuria did not clear up on its own. Tested for diabetes--glucose level looked normal. Checked inside her mouth and he thought it looked more red/pink than it should Took a swab and tested it for bacteria. Found more gram negative bacteria than he would have liked. Gave her an injection of Baytril and now she is on it orally for 14 days.
Also have her on a powdered probiotic that I sprinkle on her food.
Any other helpful hints/suggestions?

So good that you got her to the vet quickly and blood tested. I hope the meds do their job fast, and the probiotics. Heat is the next priority. Have you read enough about that here to know how to do it safely? If you need help, signal.

Hoping for fast healing!

I have her cage covered --3 sides and a ceramic heat lamp near her perch (attached on the outside). We also have a heater for the room that maintains the room at about 78 or so separate from the ceramic heater.
Is there something else I should be doing besides this method?

That and the meds should do it. Good mom :)

One other question---Marlie sure likes family contact and to be let out of her cage to socialize with us. Is it better to leave her in the cage for the time being, or are short spurts out ok? I don't want her to feel lonely or like she is being ignored, but I also want to do what is best for her healing.
BTW, her droppings look really good (as droppings go!) this evening.

Whoa! I'm glad you brought your bird to the vet
I guess I am so used to having egg layers that I seem to attribute everything to just hormones. Whenever my birds are 'off" and I've brought them to the vet 90% of the time it was 'normal" relating to hormone stress.
Is your birdy a boy or a girl?
I hope all is going well

A girl. The vet did bring up the possibility of egg formation, but he felt her abdomen and could not feel anything. He didn't rule it out though as he said sometimes you can't feel it. When the gram negative showed up he thought that was probably the answer.

Usually the bacterial level is up when eggs are forming but if the vet found bacteria in the mouth rather than poop it was probably a good idea to apply antibotics...hmmmm... I hope she is OK

Interesting! Didn't know that. Well, if it does turn out to be egg related, I suppose we'll know soon enough.
